We all know fanboyism exists, and everyone has a favorite console or handheld. And probably most of us have a console or brand we don't care for as well. However, shouldn't your personal opinion be left best to yourself IF you work at a store like Gamestop, and are talking to people that are buying games on the system you DON'T like?

Last night I went to Gamestop and I was the only customer. There were 3 employees working and 2 asked if I wanted help. I asked what they had heard good things about for Wii & 360 (though I avidly read reviews and forums, I still ask opinions from store staff). 2 of the 3 guys started laughing as soon as I mentioned Wii, and sarcastically said "Oh, GAMES for the Wii, High School Musical, Dancing With The Stars (laughing), Looney Tunes are out. You even get a microphone with HSM." I replied by telling him I wasn't looking for games for my kids, but myself. They asked why I was even looking at Wii. I told them Wii finally had more good games coming out. RE, Galaxy, Ghost Squad, are coming, I knew GHIII was out, and Manhunt though I had not heard great things about MH this time around and wondered what they thought. They asked me why I thought MH was out and I held up the box from the display. They had no idea it was out. They told me the best new game out was Ratchet & Clank, period. I told them it had extremely good reviews, but I was only interested in Wii & 360 choices (they never mention a 360 title my entire time in the store) as I had not yet taken the PS3 plunge.

I continued to browse 360 & DS titles for a few minutes, decided to pick up BWII, and went to the register. They rang me up, I asked them what day Lego SW would be in next week, and confirm the date for MOH:Heroes. They told me MOH was already out and it "blew". The third employee broke the silence and corrected the two PS3Fanboys and told them the correct release date for new MOH and that it had a great buzz and was 32 player mulitplayer online. He also said he hoped Lego SW had a lightsaber one on one (even if it was in a minigame format) and I told him I thought we had to wait for April to get that as it should be, but I know there is some light saber wagglin' in LSW3 to tide us over.

Hey I have no problem with fanboys supporting thier system of choice, but then 1 of the other guys said "that's a cool idea if you can get passed the fact SWFU will look like garbage on the Wii". So I decided to see how bad the Sony fanboyism/ Wii Bashing was going to get. I asked "How is Zack & Wiki selling?" to the really negative guy. His reply? "What is that?" I told him what it was, and he didn't know what "point and click" was or if it was out. I again picked it up and showed it to him. He sneered at the cutesy cover art. The one positive guy said it had a really big buzz and rattled off a bunch of older P&C Sierra titles, and the negative guy responded with "You guys must be really old, I have no idea what any of that is". The positive guy told him, "Now those were games" and his response was "Sounds gay".

I kept smiling and thought I would just make him mad now (especially because he had just called me and the other GS employee old). I asked him the release date for Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii (knowing there was no rease date yet). He and the other (not so rude) Sony fanboy looked at me like I was crazy. I told him Capcom switched to the Wii over a month ago. Again he responded "That's so gay, that's really gay, it BELONGS on Sony" I told him my first Final Fantasy game was on Nintendo, they switched to Sony because they saw room to make a great profit. Just like SE was coming out with a WiiWare FF title, because there is a market for them to make money from it.

He asked where I was hearing this stuff, he worked at GS and never heard anything so ridiculous. I asked him if he had the internet, he did. And if he heard MGS4 had been delayed, he hadn't. The positive guy at the store must read a lot as well, because he mentioned reading rumours that it delayed as it was going to come out on 360 as well (which I think is just wishful thinking AT BEST at this point). The PS3Fanboy looked visibly upset and I told him I thought MGS4 would stay exclusive just like GT5 (at least for now). I told HIM thanks for my purchase and to have a good night.

So here's my question. Shouldn't Fanboyism of this level be kept to yourself if you are helping a customer who is not looking at your system of choice. This guy was never going out of his way to be rude to me (except with the age thing), just going WAY out his way to diss the Wii. And avoided all mention of the 360. This kind of stuff can't be good for Wii or 360 software sales, and actually make me irked at Sony, as this guy had the arrogance I associate with them. (Yes, I DO know this is not Sony's fault, I have a massive PS2 library, there's just nothing that has made me interested in dropping at least $400 for a ps3 yet).

Shouldn't he have looked at his release sheet, and SOLD me Wii360 titles I might be interested in? He could have told me about the Orange Box, he would know that even if he ignores 360 like he seemed be ignoring Wii. I have to say, Iam not surprised at anything, but GS is paying this guy to drive off business. Crazy.

I used to work at a Gamestop so I will give you my best assesment for the situation. First off those kids are idiots. That felt good. Second often enough people walk into a gamestop and WANT to know an employees opinion on a certain console and know how to properly spend their money, that being said these kids DID NOT do that. They blindly bashed a system that you obviously were going tobuy games for.

Now there are several occasions when I directly told certain customers my opinion and swayed their purchasing desires. For example I advised many customers who were buying a PS3 to pick up a 360 instead for numerous reasons. The first being pretty obvious, the customer says, " I am buying a PS3 to (note he says I AM BUYING), and I wanna know what games should I buy that are great, I wanna pick up at least two".

I then procede to explain how there are really only two GREAT PS3 games out right now, but there is a plethora of incredibly games on the 360, and he would be getting it for 200 (back then) dollars cheaper.

Now one might ask, why would managment allow you to tell someone to buy something thats 200 dollars less!?! Simple reason, We make zero profit on any 360 or PS3 sold. Not one dollar. So not only am I convincing them to buy a better system for cheaper, GAINING their trust because I am helping them save money, but they are also more likely to pick up more games because they are spending less money on the actual system. I have dissuaded at least 8 customers from picking up a PS3 and having them opt for a 360/Wii (if we had it, normally we didn't).

If you have accurate intelligent opinions that hhelp the customer, and you don't mock a system they already own and are only going to buy games for that system (PS3 included) then there is no reason to express your opinion. These two guys you are talking about are idiots and not only were bad with people, but were ignorant on their own products but products of the overall merchandise in their store.

They were very unprofessional. If someone said to me that point and click adventure games are gay, things would get ugly.

That's one of those points where if I felt particularly bitchy I would have raised a huge stink, demanded to see the manager, gotten some free stuff, and possibly even asked that the employee get fired (it's fun to be a jerk sometimes).

And yeah, Gamestop employee's are generally (not all) the lowest of the low.  These are the type of people you usually see constantly commenting on places like Digg and also where they get all their opinions (note-- not form their own).

Random and completely off topic, but I was actually so desperate for a job once because I didn't want to leave the Dallas area that I actually picked up an application for that place, luckily the next day I got an interview and the next week I had a job.

wow.. thats the complete opposite of every GameStop around me and the state of Florida. Most of the guys that work there are 360 fans. I had fun destroying their logic when I bought my PS3 back in Nov. =]

well what was their logic that you speak of?

Deep into the darkness pearing

Long i stood there

Wondering

Fearing

Doubting.

Minimum-wage GS employees aren't usually the most educated crop of people to begin with. As a retail employee in general you should be able to sell your products without mindlessly bashing them regardless of your actual knowledge of them, though. Basically a couple of idiots that should be fired but won't be 'cause no one else probably wants to work there. (regardless of which system they were doing it to).

They should be fired. Plain and simple. They're losing the store money by dismissing games customers want to buy, and, at least to me, the use of the phrase "that's gay" in a professional setting should at least get you sent to seminars about bigotry.

But yeah, I suppose what DKII says about the pay-level also makes sense. Companies get what they pay for. Just sucks to be a customer in that situation.

As a current employee at Gamestop (as my second job), I'm gonna have to agree with this. Most of the employees are either not college educated, or do all of their schooling at a Community College (not bashing CC's, it's just the stereotypical CC around here isn't all that great. Comparable to a regulars class in high school).

Gamestop managers when they hire have typically about 200 applications to sift through. That's quite a daunting task for any hiring manager. So after they throw away a few from losers, they're just happy to see one that says "high school graduate".

Fanboyism is rampant. I'll be the first to admit that I like to push the Wii, but we're always sold out so I don't ever get the chance. When somebody asks about the 360 or PS3, I answer as honestly as I can and show them the games. Typically when a customer looks at the PS3 selection of games, then the 360, they wonder why the PS3 game selection is so small compared to everything else. (lol) I realize this last sentence didn't contribute anything, but I had to get it out there.

Anyway, they won't get fired. For some, this minimum wage job is all they have and all they know. It would be wrong to take that away from them regardless of how much they bash.

Also, GS typically doesn't hire under 18 unless desperate. They're too worried about theft.

Did you (or anyone for that matter) botther to read what I said?

I would love to hear your incredible arguments for the PS3 that you invoked on said employees. What great PS3 logic destroys the obviously flawed 360 sales numbers?

I didnt even argue for the PS3 or any console. Just PC. They believed not even could beat the "all-holy" 360. The controls were unmatched and no game has ever sucked. That was their entire argument. I just said Kameo, Mouse and Keyboard, no RROD, and free internet play. All employees shut-up and frowned.
