^If MS gets aggressive next year with price cuts, what does Sony really have left to combat? Do they really want to engage in a price war with MS which they can't really afford?

I don't think Sony needs to worry about a price war at this point, particularly considering how well they've just done while being $100 more expensive than the 360. They need to focus on games sales and profitability. Fortunatley, given their recent marketing trends, they are probably on the right track to do just that.

By the end of the next fiscal year perhaps, but that assumes they maintain sales and profit margins, if MS cuts aggressively, and regaisn the momentum, those projections likely go out the window

Even if they cut and get some sales back
the PS3 will continue to sell because it has reached a sufficiently LOW price to be accessible for many

so MS can cut what they want, it will not change Sony faith and may even not be worth the value at the very end for their business

200$ 360 sales < 300$ PS3 sales

sony doest need to increase their sales per week PARTICULARLY since they are still losing money on hardware !

That makes the mistake that  PS3 and 360 don't have a shared audience, a lower price 360 will cut into PS3 sales as people going into stores will see they can get most of their games on either system

- I do agree but in term of perceived value the PS3 is far superior to the 360, IT IS A FACT (see the 550k at the Slim launch or the BF sales) so if the MS wants to dominate again, they will to drop the price AGAIN, meaning less money for them AND a quite unpredictable effect. Will they really get more sales ? Will the price drop be worth in term of sales boost ? But they seem to be targetting money right now ... so no price drop.

- you dont take in count that 360 possess the arcade model that was stealing Wii sales in 2008 du to his low price but that is, now, countered by the new 200$ price of the Wii. That is why, IMO, the 360 is "suffering" right now : 360 is attacking from the 2 side, from 2 competitor that possees a FAR better brand name and perceived value than the 360 ("it just break everytime !")

If that were the case a $199 xbox compared to a $399 PS3 or $299 PS3 would make no difference if your logic is less price > higher price. Considering no other realistic variables really dumbs down a complex discussion on sales trends.

I'm not ignoring other variables, major variables I'm including is library and specs.

Overall I'm pointing out how similar PS3 and 360 are, they share very similar libraries, and really blu-ray is the major noticeable difference in specs, and with blu-ray prices as low as they are, a $100 price difference between the Elite and Slim would probably favor the elite.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Right now they aren't cutting, because they want to show a profit for the fiscal year, but that ends in March, they can easily cut after that

Wii and 360/PS3 are very different, its why the PS3 and 360 price cuts didn't really affect sales, even when the Slim launched, Wii sales remained stable

Well the elite was never mentioned as the console of discussion. So when making a point i recommend being more concise with your topics.

Too bad its not realistic. By the time MSFT would drop the Elite to $199 the PS3 could drop to $249 (Next fall) If they drop it sooner theyd either have to get rid of the arcade model, which by all account they probably favor since its os cheap and require so many additional purches to upgrade it.

I think it speaks volumes to how much the generation has changed when we need to talk about whether an Elite needs to be $100 less than the PS3 to compete.

I'm not really sure how a company having awful sales for several years, and then cutting the price and seeing a boost for a couple of months (so far) could in any way be classed as 'textbook' business.

Textbook business would be selling out from the start and continuing to do so before an eventual slow decline.

You know, kind of like the Wii.

But if PS3 drops, then you basically have Sony going deeper into the red to combat the 360, kind of my point, MS would benefit either way, as Sony would be forced to continue to bleed

Welcome to the forums new user.

Zucas was talking about recreating a brand image. On this website, as you may have noticed, we discuss sales figures of consoles sold. We may see a thread or two pop up to talk about financials, but this thread here is a sales figures thread. Its not an economics or shareholders thread.

I hope you enjoy your stay here new user.
