Forums - Gaming - RE4 Game of the Decade? Official Resident Evil 4 Thread

So, which version of the game is this about? 'Cos there's a difference between the PC and Wii version, for instance.
To me, and I guess pretty much everyone with an inkling of sanity and who's not an obsessed fanboy, it'd be something like

PC>>>>>>>>>>>>PS2/GC (imo the original was better, but the PS2 version had more content)>>>>Wii
Not counting the mobile versions for obvious reasons.

Also, the game gave birth to one of the funkiest controllers ever:

This and Metroid Prime are definitely games I could see as Game of the Decade.

Resident Evil 4 felt like a revolution, atleast for me. Sure, they changed the Resident Evil formula a bit, but in a good way. Some of the horror was taken away, but instead you got smarter enemies. I remember fighting in the village, and climbing up a ladder to find a safe spot to kill the enemies from. But these bastards climb up after you! Not just that, they climb through windows, smashes through doors...The feeling of never being 100% safe was great. The level were you are in a cabin having to defend yourself against a horde of villagers really made you feel like a trapped animal. You could barricade windows and doors but that didn't stop them.
I hope we will see a RE 4-2 soon :)

yes I feel the same way.  I still find the game to be atmospheric and creepy for a lot of those reasons.  Replaced shock value with intensity and realism of neve being able to escape.  Think it was a good transition.

Game of the what?

Maybe it was THAT amazing a few years ago, but after finishing it on the PS2 a month ago, I'd give it an 8, no more.

Oh it is still that amazing nowadays but not everyone is going to like the way I did or the press did or others did.  But do discuss your likes and dislikes of it as that is what the thread is for.

However, The Mercenaries part of the game deserves a 9+. Especially with the HUNK. And on the castle level. Can't imagine doing it without an automatic weapon... too fun.

The main downfall of the game is the island part. It was scary and ambient-ish in the village and castle. On the island, it was just a plain shootout in most parts. Kudos for the regenerators though. Good stuff.

it's definitely in my all time top 5. in terms of the best of this decade, it's either re 4, gears of war 1, or super smash bros melee. i didn't play re 4 until i bought it for the gc on a whim in 2007. possibly one of the wisest decisions i ever made about anything. the game blew my mind, and indirectly got me into games outside of games only on nintendo consoles. for some reason, it allowed me to appreciate mature rated games, because before, i just viewed them as mindless violence and cursing. i guess you could say, i don't play little kid video games anymore because of this game. so yeah, i'll give it the nod for best of the decade

It was a survival horror game with less horror and more survival.

Yep it didn't need the shock value to still be a creepy game.  As soon as that chainsaw reved, you were creeped enough as it was haha.

I would call it Game of the Decade along with Half-Life 2.
I played it twice (on GC and Wii). And I'll definitely replay it on the Wii this summer.

Yes Half Life 2 is another one of those in my top 5 for the decade.  Top games of the deacde for me aren't decided completely yes but the likes of RE4 and HL2 are definitely among the top candidates.  I should create one for HL2 haha.

I haven't read the whole thread, just letting everyone know that we're actually working on a 'Game of the Decade' feature, and I'd say it's a safe bet that RE4 is one of the nominees

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Well I knew every media site in the gaming industry would.  I've been personally thinking about this since early 2009 as the decade hit its last year.
