Apparently the 440,000 also includes Canada;

http://www.techflash.com/seattle/2009/12/microsoft_sony_playing_games_with_holiday_console_numbers.html

The blogger seems quite outraged, but seeing as Black Friday is mainly a US affair with token Canadian participation I think US only sales should be easily over 400,000.

As the blogger says;

"Sony representative said the company doesn't plan to issue a clarification. Instead, it plans to clarify the issue for reporters who ask about it."

maybe someone from this site should ask SCEA for a clarification, and maybe ask for US only numbers too?

I'm glad they cleared that up. Still could be closer to 500k depending how much more over 440k it was + Mexico. We at least know those arent included now. But if Sony is reporting Canada and Americas you can count on the other 2 doing the same.

"Over 440,000" in PR speak means less than 450,000.  I don't think Mexico can make up over 50,000, so 500,000 in North America doesn't seem reasonable, 440,000 plus is still a decent figure though.

Like what ioi said BF is hard to track. Even for Sony. No "over 440" doesnt mean less than 450. They might not know how much more than 440 it is but they know it is. So they give the number the know is legit instead of looking like dummies if it turns out it isnt later.

Wii is massively down YoY, lost momentum? No way...
When will the DS calm down?! That thing is crazy!

Wii is YOY down and "STILL" outselling 360 and PS3 this year...

Yes, did anyone imply otherwise? "That fat dude from Lost has lost a some weight." "Yeah, but he's still fatter than Mick Jagger." Obviously.

hurley lost weight?

^Dunno, haven't seen it since season 1 when it was actually watchable. Just an example.

PS3 does not deserve these high sales numbers. They just got lucky because they bundled some games with the PS3 which attracted more buyers. Sony put more effort into advertising the PS3 in America. The current sales trend will not last for long.

What are you talking about? PS3 is some naughty schoolchild who did not study for the exams?

How is Sony pouring money through advertising and bundling "lucky" if anything they took active steps to insure success, the opposite of luck. One could argue they worked very hard for it, waited and paid for 2nd and first party developers to make triple a game, price drop and allocating monies to a large advertising campaign. At what point does luck enter into it.

The current sales trend has been since the slim/price cut. The arcade has been significantly cheaper and has not out sold the slim in the past two months except during the Wal-Mart deal where Microsoft/Wal-Mart gave 100 USD if people brought an Xbox 360. So how Microsoft can defeat Sony is buy chopping 100USD off the sticker price, how likely is that.

Very likely, next year. Well, it will be a $50 cut probably.

Also, 360 still stands a good chance of defeating PS3 in November as is. We dont have hard numbers for 360 on BF (likely significantly less than PS3), but 360 gained a lot early in the month with the $100 GC deals and the MW2 bundle.

I'll wait for official numbers. Cant trust this. Wii sales seem rather low if the ps3 sold that much

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

So likily. . . that instead of just chopping 100USD off the sticker price world wide microsoft stuck with one american retailer walmart and gave away 100USD wal mart GC's. A stop gap as PS3 was outselling it marginally in USA in the lead up to november and significatly worldwide.

Wii sales are low because the Wii is falling off. Even the price cut only helped stem the bleeding.

If PS3 sold 440k, lets assume 360 sold a conservative 300k, the HD twins outsold the Wii almost 1.5:1. The HD twins used to be lucky to beat the Wii at all. Now they are blowing it out.

Huh? Microsoft had nothing to do with what Wal Mart did. Stop with that crap.

Microsoft wont chop $100 off, they will chop $50 off, NEXT year. And when they do, they'll be outselling PS3 again just as before. There's no way I see the Arcade going to $99, it's too early for that. PS2 took forever to get to $99.

PS3 might not even outsell 360 in the USA for 3 months, despite a massive redesign and now $300 in price cuts since it launched. See, there's different ways to look at things.

I know the PS3 fans want to kick the 360 and say it can never recover, forgetting that PS3 took it's lumps throught 2008-2009 and survived. The 360 will do the same. In fall 2008 PS3 didn't have a price cut while 360 did, and in 2009 360 didn't while PS3 did, hence the sales swings are nothing surprising. This is just Microsoft taking some lump while they wait for big moves next year (Natal, Reach, price, probably 360 slim, etc) the same as PS3 did last year. The difference is, Xbox is very profitable right now while PS3 has bled money constantly.
