This is just my opinion but you could try the two GBA games that have been localized, especially the first one since it has 10 chapters of tutorial for newcomers.

i would start with the GC version path of radiance then the wii version radiant dawn, then the gba/ds ones for portability lol...but def. get the console ones, they are great, but you must play path of radiance before playing radiant dawn!
