As I see it. The biggest problem with the slim would be making it look nice and be able to use an existing hard drive

Sure, price plays a huge part, but slims have sold very well in the past therefore ps3 *slim* contributed to ps3's sales this winter.

Slim 360 would never happen. It would discriminate against existing XBox 360 owners. HDDs with existing X360s would be incompatible with a Slim 360. "Slim" is a Sony tradition. Microsoft has Project: Natal up its sleeve for 2010 which will take the video game industry by storm. Microsoft is currently business as usual and will sell between 9 and 10 million for 2009.

Sony behind the 8 ball and had to release PS3 Slim with $299 price tag a year early. Game developers and consumers demanded it. PS3 will end up selling around 12 million for 2009- narrowing the worldwide sales gap with the 360 to 5 million units. But it is too little too late. PS3 hardware losses for first three years totals 4 to 5 billion dollars. Wii currently 30 million units+ in front of the PS3 and the gap is growing all the time.

Second place finish will mean absolutely nothing. PS3 is getting its ass kicked by the Wii. Sony with PS3 is the real loser this generation. No questions about that. PS3 Slim = short term sales numbers gain, but it is too little too late. PS3 no longer PS2 B/C.

ohhh.....the classic "but remember the PS3 was supposed to be the PS2 so it's still a massive failure" defense when the 360 isn't winning.  Sigh....been a while since I've seen that, brings me back.

Harddrive sideways somwhere inside the 360 slim................ problem solved.

So it may stick out a tiny bit, no biggie, it's still  *technically* a NEW console and a new microsoft advertising blitz awaits

OK, picture this.................... Would the ps3 have sold as well as it did recently if it was the fat ps3 that was reduced to $299?

Hats off to Sony........ announce a price cut and a new slim ps3 model all in one swoop. (hence maximising hype, new design blah blah blah)

Hats off to Microsoft too, theres no way sony would have resorted to desperate tactics like releasing a slim version of the ps3 long before it was due if it was not for the 360 taking the ps3 to school in sales last year.

Question is.......... what if Microsoft released a 360 slim? Shameless rip off yes (Achievements/trophies people, yes, sony steal too, before you have a go, people rip people off, sony are masters at this) but look what it did for ps3 sales.

Would a 360 slim with Microsofts advertising muscle put sony even further behind in sales this gen when compared to the 360?

Yes it would, its all about the price.

PS3 was taking it to school in sales untill MS made a price cut dude.

MS wont, they lack the hardware experience to pull it of.

If they did a massive price cut, still no but it be even.

"M$ lack the hardware experience" haha thats funny. Honestly it wouldnt be completly up to microsoft it would be up to their semi conducting partners to make the chips quiet and cool enough to be able to operate with smaller fans and heatsinks.

Yes a 360 slim is possible but the slim part doesnt really matter. its the price cut that really spurs the sales. Had the PS3 slim arrived at $399 instead of $299 sales would not have picked up very much. Its the price that matters. And yes we will see more price cuts from all sides in order to keep increasing sales.

+1

- you have no idea how much they will earn at the end of it all.

- you have no idea how much BR is worth to them, you can say it lost 4/5b but Br alone might make that up.

- wii is selling but wii selling is not  hurting PS3 sales, and PS3 increased sales have little affect on wii.  They can co exist, 360 PS3 cant.

- 1st 2nd 3rd mean less if you sale +100m earn a few billion and open up new ways to make money (PSN, movie/music)

Sales on Blu-Ray and movies sector is totally separate to the PS3 hardware itself. Sony will be lucky to recoup the 4 or 5 billion dollars incurred on PS3 hardware. Free PSN, development of the Dell processor, inclusion of the Blu-Ray in the PS3 have all driven up the unit cost price  of the PS3 this generation.  The costs per unit has fallen 70% since the PS3 was first launched three years ago due to economies of scale, price reductions and revisions. But it will be still hard push to recoup the initial losses incurred on the PS3 hardware.

Microsoft have much deeper pockets than Sony.  Microsoft have lost a lot less money than Sony this generation and have expanded their market share. XBox Live revenue stream has offset the $1 billion dollars paid out to cover the RROD and three year warranties.

Microsoft has helped financed third party games which have been released later on the PS3. Competition is good for the video game industry. XBox 360 and PS3 can co-exist. PC game support has taken a huge dive this generation due to the growth of the XBox brand and developers see consoles as being a more profitable option than PC. If it was not for Microsoft entering the video game industry last generation: the technology in consoles would not be where they are today.

PS3 has no chance of reaching 100 million console units sold by end of generation. 70 to 80 million would be stretching it. This generation has been a lot more competitive than the previous two generations. More even distribution of market share. No longer a PS1 or PS2 monopoly. All thanks to the success of both the Wii and to a much lesser extent the XBox 360.

Sony dude not sce or Sony pictures or electronics, Sony.  PS3 is why Br won, thats why they stuck it in there and that was a huge cost.  You think they did not do the math Br costs for PS3 <> overall revnue from BR.  SCE is not independant, Sony calls the shots.

So MS has more $, whats your point.

You misunderstood.  The people who buy a wii or PS3 really have no reason why not to pick up the other later on.  They are a compliment of each other.  But many will choose PS3 or 360 only, they wont buy both.  Thats why i say they cant co exist.

YAhh same way it had no chance of ever out selling the 360 in NA right or wii anywhere (cough Japan).
