I can see why Ireland are so into this. Apparently World cup qualification would have added £1billion to their economy. But at the end of the day rules are rules; And the referee's decision is final in football, whatever mistake he has made.

A 33rd spot will be rejected. The only competition I can recall where someone hasn't qualified but had an extra spot added for them is the champions league a few years back. That was because Liverpool had won it the previous year but had not qualified to protect their title. It was successful, but that was the one successful case amongst dozens of similar cases that were unsuccessful.

I would imagine that the Liverpool case would be cited, but I doubt it wouldn't do any good.

Ireland need to accept it and get on with life I'm afraid.

lol, u mean million instead of billion I hope.

Anyway, what really happened in the match? Somone xplain. This article is worthless because it at one hand talks about an over-time goal, at the othe rhand  talks about the need for extra referees. If the problem only was the goal being overtime that's due to ref ignorance, you dont need extra pairs of eyes for that.

Bleh, I meant £100 million that Ireland have lost. It's France who would have lost a billion (Source). Sorry I got it the wrong way round.

What happened was Thierry Henry controlled the ball with his hand in the penalty box and it resulted in a goal. It was blatantly a hand ball, but the goal was given. If that goal wasn't given the match would have likely gone to penalties.

That's a scandal. It's always the big nations who get away with it. FIFA is all politics.

It's right that Ireland brings this up even thogh it's impossible for them to qualify, even they know it, but it puts a little attention to this comedy with corrupt referees without integrity.

You should see some of the English lower league games! We have clubs with professional players being referred by amateur refs. Some of the decisions made are astounding. Although I can sympothise with Ireland there is far worse goes on in lower league football but of course these games are never mentioned. Mistakes are part of the game and Ireland have to learn to live with that just as every other club does.

This is ridiculous, we would have to repeat half of the matches that happen cause in all of them referee could make mistakes, hell, accept it, its part of the game.

Im sure Ireland or any country could look back at history and find situations that favor them or fuck them like this one. It happens all the time so I dont see why they could ask for an extra spot.

Hell, in the qualifiers I could find a couple of our goals in which our player were offside, or the same thing against us, a hand that wasnt seen by the ref happens all the time and more crying is useless.

I felt sorry for the Irish, they got done by a ref and cheating Henry but they just being sad at the moment just drop it, it happened it wont be reversed. They should Focus on introducing some changes to the game (technology) not on whining cause that is onl going to alienate people

The problem wasn't the handball so much as the fact that they probably shouldn't of been playing France in the first place, however Fifa changed the rules mid tournament to support the big guys who might be going out.

The problem is.... rules AREN'T rules for FIFA.

I can site at least 2 rules they've blantantly changed in the middle of this tournament.

First was the fact that these playoffs were even seeded in the firstplace.

And second was they changed how who goes to the worldcup by instuting a final playoff game of Egypt Vs Algeria that went directly against the previous rules.

If FIFA is going to be changing rules of tournaments in the middle of tournaments why no drag it out and ask for rules to be changed?  Since FIFA is more then willing to do it for it's "favorites".

Did Ireland bitch about that? Nooooo they didn't...

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Ireland should just focus in making a better team next time so they dont end up in the playoffs.

It's hard when you're drawn with Italy...
