Forums - Gaming - Famitsu review scores New Super Mario bros Wii receives a perfect score!

Yeah...no. The game doesn't deserve anywhere near a perfect score. Good game, but I beat it in 2 days and it doesn't compare to some other Mario games.

WIN!

Just bought NSMB today. I wasn't SO impressed at first, but after 20 odd minutes of play the magic was really flowing. A bit too hectic with 4players, but 2player game is VERY nice.

About Famitsu: Well, statistically they are giving out more perfect scores, that's for sure, but who can deny the quality of those titles? I guess it's nice if the standard is sky-high and a 40/40 means the game is absolutely stellar, but still they've given out less full marks than the majority of reviewers so it's still an accomplishment.

NSMB is going to be huge on the long run. Even my girlfriend likes it a lot because it takes her back to playing Mario on the NES as a wee tod. They should bundle it with the Wii instead of Wii Sports. Wii Sports isn't worth more than $15 anyway, so they should sell it seperately.

WD Nintendo. Ownage once again.

Oh, and all of you that say things like: "Famitsu is becoming a joke" etc. are just plain rediculous.

I don't think they're becoming a joke, but they are becoming like many other reviewers and handing out vey uneven scores based on hype.  it just so happens that their perticular market is the Japanese market so their high scores and bias tend to favor Wii/DS/PSP games.  Whereas in the west, our reviewers high scores and bias favor the HD systems.

Famitsu may be scoring some games high based on hype partially (like many other reviewsites I might add) but for once Wii is winning out here with 4 games!!!! so far getting topscores. With all the reviewsites out there that have bias against wiigames (you know they do =) ) I must say this feels fresh for a change.

That's the fourth one this year.

Add FF13, and it will be FIVE perfect games in one year. Really?

Famitsu has become a joke.

Because we have 4 excellent games this year? It's soooooo difficult to accept this fact?

@edit: And LOL look at what you are saying. Final Fantasy is quality franchise, it will be an excellent game for sure. FF13 probably will deserve a high score and if you see a 40 you will go crazy saying "OMG Famitsu is a crap now" and you will completely forget that Final Fantasy is an excellent franchise. Come on.. where is the sense here?

The fact is that the game industry is evolving, it's more easy to make an excellent game now than before, and you can't blame Famitsu if we have a lot of great titles this year. They won't make excuses to give a low score for a game just to make the magazine seem more severe (like EDGE), if the game deserves 10 they will give a 10.

I'm not denying that there are five excellent games this year. There are far more than that.

But if FIVE games this year are "perfect", then standards need to be raised.

Famitsu is supposed to be strict. I would expect the usual throwing out of 10/10 from 90% of Western reviewers, because they suck. Famitsu was once one of the most respected reviewers in the world, and now they've stooped to this.

I'm not saying that NSMBWii does or doesn't deserve 40/40, that's hardly the point.

Hmm wonder how much this will help boost preorders. Game is definitely going to sell well but will help spread by word of mouth even better.

I agree, Famitsu use to be more strict.  And I came right out and said this game shouldn't have been given a perfect score.  Its not the best Mario game ever made or even the best game of this year, let alone 'perfect' material.

Just stating that Famitsu has started rating games based on bias, like many reviewers now adays.  Frankly, I wish they'd go back to rating like they did in the past.  Heck, this is the magazine which downscored all the Dragon Quest games each year, the most popular games in Japan.  And now they gave DQIX a 40/40.  Not that I can say that's a bad thing yet because I have yet to play DQIX yet.

Yes I must say Famitsu has been throwing those 40/40 a little too much but hey I'm not going to argue they can't do it. The only problem is that when you start putting out too many perfects you put a cap on what you deem to be 10/10 meaning if you ever have a game that is "better" than it then you technically have to give it the same score.

That's why its logical to not give many games perfect or 0 scores because then you have put a standard on what your extremes are supposed to be when indeed they are by nature undefined. If you only do a few at the extremes then you can maintain that integrity but as soon as you overstretch it that goes away. Of course is still their opinions and of 4 people so if that's how they feel I respect it.
