Forums - Website Topics - Forum Rules are Ridiculously Out of Date

Thread derailing

It's getting out of control.

I can add a note about that in substance.

I agree that at the moment those aren't being moderated as well as they should, but I'd rather try to beat the moderators into enforcing it more consistently than remove it from the rules.

I agree that this is probably the best way to do it - though I don't know how the mods will react.

And the rules list looks fine for a first draft. I can't think of anything that's really missing, but you might want to get Gnizmo to look.

I might suggest adding in the "exclusive" rules into it, though, and de-stickying that thread. You could make a stickied topic "Forum Rules" and stick it at the top of pretty much every forum - yes I kknow it's redundant, but it also means people will definitely see it no matter what.

Thanks, Gniz. The moderations taking place on this site have no rhyme or rhythm. You'll get banned for something one day, and watch 15 people do the same thing the next with no consequence. I've been banned for arguing back and forth with a member, BACK AND FORTH, and I was the only one banned. The rules and terms of service are one thing, the Moderators are here act like bias is just a natural thing we have to deal with. If I say something criticizing the XBOX 360, if a diehard 360 fanboy moderator happens to see it, I'm banned. But if a more level headed 360-favored mod sees it, or a neutral mod, or PS3-biased mod, or Wii-biased mod, they'll just add to the conversation.

Phrancheyez your mod history reads like a guide of the things you should not do on these forums, including numerous instances of insults and trolling. You have never been banned for "an argument" you have been banned for: calling someone a baby, calling someone a fanboy, calling someone a troll, trolling yourself (multiple times), calling someone a moron, calling someone an idiot.

You should not be complaining about the forum rules, as if anything me updating them will only lead more quickly to a permaban for you if you continue to act the way you do.

People you cannot see another member's moderation history.

This means that just because you reported someone and they weren't banned does not mean that they were not moderated. We have warnings as well, and since moderation is progressive (repeats of the same offense result in harsher penalties) you have no idea what they "deserved" and it's not for you to say. The lack of the same ban for the same penalty is not a sign of inconsistency because the punishment is different for every user based on their individual behavior.

If you're going to threaten me, permaban me now and save me the grief.  I don't care for you 'holier than thou' attitude.  And yes, I have been banned for an argument, more than once.  I don't just open random threads and called random people babies, fanboys, trolls, morons or idiots.  I'm not as stupid as you seem to make me out to be.

I was also banned for 'trolling' for 'trolling' the same way tons of people do very obviously every single day..but since I trolled in a thread that, like I and Serious stated before, had something to do negative with some mods favorite or favored console, I got banned.  Yet the very next day, 15-20 trolls did the exact same thing I did.

Don't attack me like that, naz.  If you're going to, just ban me, I don't have time for that kind of childishness.  I know you're supposed to back your mods because you picked them, but when they're obviously (to a lot of people) doing a bad job, maybe you should look at it a little more subjectively than trying to blast me in front of people.  I can call you out just as well.

Heh, and to think I was kind to you, you start insulting other members and was banned for it, then made an alt just to come say "fuck you" to me, which I perma'd the alt and decided to be nice and not extend your ban, maybe I should have :P

I de-stickied and locked it, but I'm leaving it linked. I feel it's easier to read in that format than it would be if pasted directly into the forum rules, but if others agree I'll try to find a way to work it in.

I'll consider stickying the forum rules in topics.

nice rules update naz.

Also, one thing I want to point out that people complain about but I feel is unjustified at times. On occasion (like right now) I've read only the 1st page but felt a reply was needed, and the person above me may or may not be trolling/flaming/posting porn. Either way, I've responded after an infraction has no bearing on if I've thought a post was in the wrong. If you have a problem with a post report it, however just because you saw no action doesn't mean there wasn't mod/user interaction going on.

As for saying you won't report as it would be too much work, well then don't complain if nothing happens. There is a limit to the number of moderators we can have and how much we can monitor.

EDIT: lol at who posted above me

Is reporting every instance of rule-breaking really feasible? Given how many people like to make reports (I've heard a bunch mention it before and I partake myself) and how many rule-breaking posts there are, would this create a queue that the mods might ot be able to deal with in a timely fashion?

I guess what I'm asking here is if it is either necessary or wise to report everything that "merits" reporting.

The rules are looking much much better from my perspective. All the major ban reasons appear to be covered now which was the biggest issue imo. I do like how the ban system is explained more thoroughly. It does mean I need to update my sig. I probably should have anyways, but its a borderline issue.

I do have one suggestion to help reduce the perception of users getting away with breaking rules. It would require a potentially non-trivial code change though so it might not be workable. Upon closing a petition have an automatic message sent saying the post was either not breaking the rules, or that appropriate action was taken. This may take more time than it is worth to implement though. This might also help promote more consistent reporting.

well, first off, if you start flooding the mod queue, there are updates that could be made to simplify our lives yet still allow you to report. Secondly, if we are getting to many reports and they are legitimate, then that means we need more mods. From the user perspective, if you have a problem with a post, report it and explain what your problem is.

Well, I wouldn't think that the mods will get to know every rule breaking instance otherwise, so I guess it's the only way. I think it would be good if the system wouldn't let you report a post that has already been reported, but I guess that until that's put into practice, mods won't have other way than to get a full queue. After all, I think it's better to delay it a bit than to completely miss a bannable offense, at least in my opinion.

From my part, I try to report everything I see

I read through the new rules update and it's straightforward and easy to understand. Keep up the good work everyone!
Not to sound cheesy but the admins/mods devotion to the site is an important reason to why I keep coming back ;)
