Iphones are portable DD devices. Are there any smart phones that aren't DD only?
It will be a few decades away for HD gaming though. |
They also have online anywhere function as well as not needing large memory for files.
You sort of made my point indirectly. I dont know anyone who uses their iphone exclusively as their pod and phone. They use an ipod in their car or while listening to music because they dont want to drain battery life and not have access to their phone features while driving (red lights, etc)
With phones youre talking about PHONES, people use them to call or text people, it has a distinct primary function, nobody buys a cell phone to use it to play tetris or to tune their guitar, they are simply accessories. When talking about DD in gaming youre talking the backbone of the hardware. ALL games being DD would require vast improvements to flash memory as well as online anywhere capability and then youre dealing with sellbacks of your product. With phones youre spending 4 dollars or 8 dollars on a game to use sparingly.
With DD for gaming, it will take innovation and something i dont hav ethe answer to, to convince people to spend 30 or 40 bucks on a game they can never trade, let friends borrow or take to friends houses. There are a lot of hurdles.
The article writer sounds like fan. When did fans become prestigious journalists? fans can't be because they colour everything poorly. So how about poor journalist instead.
How was the PSP ever "Under performing"? There was no other Sony handheld before the PSP in the games market? PSP was supposed equal sales of the DS? ah ha, the competitiveness and disappointment of the so called journalist shows it's self.
How is the PSPGo setting back DD medium? because Sony is the king of DD? i'm sorry the DD king is the PC. It's extremely healthy. PC DD has been around for over 10 years. Cell phone DD has been around for a LONG time too. Sorry but the PSP has ZERO/0 impact on the DD health. Once again the journalist shows his colours in that "HIS" product isn't performing up to par as say iPhone/iTouch/iTune/PSN/Live/WiiWare/PC......so on.
Oh and of course what others have mentioned. Full prices games on a more expensive machine that theoreticaly should be cheaper with the removal hardware. I can't imagine any hardware that may have been added costing significantly more than the UMD drive.
As a correction. Even if you buy a game from retail you are still leasing the game. You only own the physical medium. When it comes to software ownership there is no difference if it's DD or Physical.
Once again the poor journalist is assuming that Sony is important player in the DD world. Since Sony move into DD is PSN and PSPGo they have in fact a TINY portion of the DD model that has been around for MANY years. No company is going to be scared off by the PSPGo failure. If I may add there is once again iPhone and the DSi which supports DSiWare and ALL cellphones where DD is doing well.
As a personal commentary. The journalist in question is very questionable as a journalist. In a matter of speaking his "article" is well written, but is just a composition of thoughts that would suit a BLOG more good journalism. Blogs don't need to be well written or thought out.
I had my 2cents I'm good. I will now leave this thread forever :P
Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
I agree. Sony doomed DD with the PSP:Go. I think Nintendo and Microsoft were watching the Go with great focus to see just how succesful a DD platform could be. I think seeing PSP Go's dismal sales will prevent any of the big three from supporting DD as the primary format on their platforms. I think DD will remain in the Virtual Console style setting for generations to come. A way for gamers to buy past games and some origional cheaper content for online.
I think it'll be another two generations before we see Digital Distribution take over as the primary format. Unless someones games push larger and larger numbers of memory then I think DD will eventually become default. But for now I highly doubt we will see DD take over any time soon. The PSP Go has proven gamers just don't care to rely entirely online for their game content.

How much do you think Sony actually lost on the thing? Considering they're getting more royalties for every game sold, it might be close to as cheap to make as the other psp without the umd drive. I don't think they're selling it at a loss. If it hurts Digital distribution; I actually like that - I want my games big and meaty. I'm willing to bet the price will eventually drop to match the other psp in due time, and over time it will outsell the old one - and probably replace it.
i know everyone wants it to flop. and want physical medium instead.
but comeon stop being so greedy, where i live there is no UMD support at all, they just stopped selling them , and for what? for hacked games!
you seriously want that instead or Downloadable games? . i'd support downloadable games if its this bad, i rather have UMDs but they don't exist anymore.
if there was no piracy for psp it would have been much better.
