Why don't you want to update?

if its because of softmods, you will most likely be fine. if its because of hard mods. i have no idea.

a *lot* of Wii games, both 1st and 3rd party, make you do a required update before you can play the game nowadays, if you have a modded console that's too bad, means you won't be able to play a lot of current and probably most of the future games.

Well if you have a modded console, you can buy an original copy then burn or buy a pirate disc to play lol.

You can play them if you have a backup launcher. You'll need one with the 002 fix.

If you are doing softmods, you need to learn what you are doing. Try to do some research. Otherwise, remove the homebrew and not deal with it. There are defiantly some risk if you are using it without knowing what is going on.

Barely any of my games have required updates to play. NSMB Wii didn't require an update for me.

Same here, but that's because if you update normally, via WiFi, there's no need to update when starting most of those new games, since your system is already up-to-date.

If you don't have internet access on your Wii, or just don't update, there still needs to be a way for developers to have you update your system in order to play the game. Hence the update via the actual gamediscs.

I always update via wifi immediately when avail.

SSBB offered update.
Galaxy offered update.
Mario Kart offered update.

nsmbwii did not offer me an update.

I don't think nsmbwii has an update on it.
