Forums - Microsoft - Rare Project Natal Game Cancelled: "Undisclosed Prototype" in Works for 1 Year

http://www.split-screen.com/2009/11/21/rare-project-natal-game-cancelled-undisclosed-prototype-in-works-for-1-year/

Remember that Project Natal game where Rare “managed a large team of engineers working on a tight schedule to go from pre-production to finished product in a year”? Turns out they’re not really going to get around to finishing this year – or ever.

This rumoured Project Natal game from Rare, found in the Linkedin profile of Software Director Bjørn Toft, was thought to involve avatars. Given Toft’s association with avatars in the past (and let’s not forget those ever-so wonderful demonstrations shown at E3 2K9), it seemed a given. Well, whatever it was has been cancelled, that too after only 4 months of involvement on Toft’s part, “due to changing business environment”.

That’s not all. Toft also posted about an undisclosed prototype Rare has been working on – alone, not in conjunction with Microsoft Game Studios – for almost a year. Your guess is as good as ours as to what it could be.

Well this is disappointing I been waiting to hear about a new game from Rare.

And where does it say it was in development for a year? Seems to me like the wording suggests that it would have been in development one year upon release. Looks like it was only in development for about 4 months.

the game must be THAT bad lo

Rare used to be one of my favorite developers back in the days.... wtf is going on?

The same thing that happens at every other development company in the world.  Prototypes are attempted, some work out, some don't.  This particular project was one of them that didn't.  Nothing new here.  This is especially true for an input device such as Natal, where different design paradigms are going to be attempted.

The problem is that they cancelled Perfect Dark 2, they won't work on a new game (KI, Conker, Banjo etc) because they are developing for Project Natal and now a Project Natal game is cancelled? :(

This just makes me upset.

Eh Rare is pretty much trash anymore IMHO. Unless its Killer instinct or an Awesome James Bond game i dont really care. Though Viva Pinata was pretty decent...

Long Live SHIO!

This was probably Perfect Dark 2. It was just announced that it was in development and then cancelled. So unless this is their third game that they have cancelled in a month. Then it is old news

Maybe a sign that NATAL is being shifted to the 720?
