Forums - General - HD-DVD or BluRay?

The ps3 is certainly the best blu-ray player out there, what would you buy? A 200.00 HD DVD player or, A $399.99 playstation 3 with a blu-ray player built in? Its obvious.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

Ummmm.......

No it isn't.

I went with Blu-Ray because of studio support. Before the Paramount defection, HD-DVD only had Universal while Blu-Ray had everything else. It was essentially 7 studios to 3 with the two neutrals. Now it's 6-3 majors with one neutral (I think Warner has some kind of ownership stake in New Line). Software sales continue to follow a 2:1 ratio. While I'm not entirely positive that HD-DVD will die off, I am absolutely positive at this time that Blu-ray Disc isn't going anywhere.

As others have said, the PS3 is an amazing media player.

HD-DVD. It has more features, and it's cheaper.

I would personally recommend you stay the heck away from the HD formats until the winner's been decided, or at least get a player that supports both.

well if a HD DVD costs $200 and a PS3 costs $400. $400-$200=$200. So if you want a HD player are you prepared to spend $200 dollars on a PS3. It is definetly worth getting the 40GB PS3.

got a HDTV.
wants HD movies.
is a gamer.

It cant be anymore obvious then that.

If you're set on getting one now, buy a dual format player so you can watch either format and get what movies you want regardless.
If you can wait then wait until one wins. Picking one over the other now is playing craps at best.

You're not refuting any of his claims by making a blunt statement like that.

There are also two points you could have been contesting.

One of the best Blu-ray players:

The second point is wide open to opinion and circumstance (money available, interest in the console, format etc.) However, taking into consideration that this is a website about video game sales, full of video game enthusiasts, the offer of getting a next gen console with a high quality Blu-ray player for only $200 more, does seem like a logical, obvious and recommendable choice.

Bluray has the movies, has the industry support and no matter what Br has the PS3 hddvd has nothing. BR is out selling hddvd in ever region of the world, some as badly as 90% for BR. Hddvd is a pointless format with little support.

The 40gb PS3 is perfect for games and Br movies, at $400 its easily the best value you can find.

Bluray can't give me The Bourne trilogy, King Kong, Batman, Stardust, Transformers, Shrek Third, etc. etc.  I don't call that "has the movies, hd dvd nothing".  Even if the whole world has 90% bluray to 10% HD DVD, it doesn't matter if it's less than 5% of total home video market.  Ratios only matter if it has effect in the bigger picture.

One thing for sure, before you buy 40gig ps3, make sure you do not want PS2 backwards compatiblity.  If you do, pay $499 for ps3 w/ bluray instead.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3
