Forums - Sales - Level 5 : JRPG's LOOSING Momentum in Japan, FF13 can HELP JRPG's in west!

I still have some issue with the premise that JRPGs suddenly took this dramatic nosedive this gen with the move to handhelds though? I mean, if we look at all the non-FF/KH/Pokemon JRPGs that cleared 500k US for all of last gen it's just...

PlayStation 2
-Dark Cloud (2001) SCEA
-Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (2004) Square Enix
-Dragon Quest VIII: Joureny of the Cursed King (2005) Square Enix

GameCube
-Tales of Symphonia (2004) Namco
-Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (2004) Nintendo

Xbox
-nothing

....and that's it. :/

Final Fantasy will be a graphical feast with rpg elements. Nothing more or less I`m afraid.

SE best achievements ended with SNES.

They will still make great make great games, but not for the demanding crowd that want something other than a

hollywood blockbuster, but something that is on an higher intellectual level.

I thought those days were over until I played Demon`s Soul`s.

SE wasn't around in the SNES days, Square Co. and Enix were separate companies.

If you're talking about Square, they made great games in the PS1/PS2 era also (Final Fantasy VIII/X/VII/Tactics, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Cross)

If you're talking about Enix, what about Dragon Quest VII, Valkyrie Profile or Star Ocean: Till the End of Time?

I also find it funny that Level 5 claims JRPGs are losing momentum in Japan when White Knight Chronicles is soon to be their best selling RPG that isn't called Dragon Quest ever in the country.

The question is...

WHY do JRPG's need momentum again. What has caused them to LOSE momentum.

Why haven't they been selling as well as previous gens?

i can think of a few reasons:

1. they were on 360. at the beggining of this gaming gen, many expected JRPG's to be on the PS3(at least i did lol) and follow a similar trend like the last gens with them on PS1/PS2 and so forth. But when they realized that they went to the  360 well this angered quite a bit of ppl and they were basically being sent to die

2. FFXIII took to long to release. Last gen FFX came out 1 or 2 years into the PS2 life cycle and establish itself as the JRPG system of choice for that gen. But this FF game is taking nearly 5 years to come out and so we are without a million seller(on a console anyway) for a vast majority of this gaming gen which dosent look good

3. Handhelds have become the home for the genre. If i were to pull up a list of all the RPG's on the PS3/360 and compare them to the DS/PSP list, ull see that the DS/PSP has a HUGE list of RPG"s to choose from which makes it the easiest choice for your RPG fix. Not only that but handhleds are a lot cheaper to develop for and the profi margins are not as high on there as they are on consoles so it makes it a lot easier for niche companies to thrive there then on conosles. Personally i perfer playing them on consoles, but as long there still around and i can play them, thats really all i care for

I think Square went from strength to strength in the SFC to PS1 transition.  They really had tons of great games throughout.

Enix though definitely lost something I felt, their SFC lineup was brimming with great and interesting games (DQ 5-6, DQ1-3r, Evo, Actraiser, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, SoulBlazer, Robotrek, Wonder Project J, Mystic Ark, Brainlord, Star Ocean, etc) but the only real PS1 standouts from them were DQ7, DQ4r, Torneko 2, Star Ocean 2 and Valkyrie Profile.  That basically continued on PS2... it's like all Enix became was DQ and tri-Ace games after SFC. :/

im sure he's talkin about in generally, of course there are a few exceptions( FF,DQ.ROF) JRPG's are failing to see good sells( were lucky to see them hit 500k) compared to last gen were a great deal at least made it 500k

I can understand some of that sentiment, but I've liked some of their post-SNES games. FF7, FF10, IU, Dissidia.

I don't usually play games for some sort of higher intellectual pursuit. For RPGS specifically, it's all about a good story (that I don't see coming after 2 hours of gameplay( *cough* FF9 minus the last boss that made no sense)) and good characters with good interchange.

That's why I absolutely LOVE Dragon Age Origins right now. The exchange between your party members is awesome, no other game I've played compares.

Edit: If I desire some kinda of higher intellectual pursuit, I read the latest science articles. I used to try to read Physics textbooks (in ebook format of course) but that got boring FAST.

So you compare the words higher intellectual only with science?

Um, no, did I say that? Why would you think I'd relate 'higher intellectual' with ONLY science?

No, that`s why I asked.

Duh! The Japanese game market is dead anyway.
