Forums - Sales - Pre-2009 holiday PS3 HW total equals post-2008 holiday 360 total

I'm a little reluctant to mention this because a lot of people get up in arms whenever you mention anything related to "from launch" or "aligned" totals.  Anyways, I was crunching numbers for a discussion in another thread comparing the success of the 2009 PS3 and 2008 360 price cuts and this kind of jumped out at me.

Looking at where the 360 was in sales at the start of the year, I saw that VGC has the 360 worldwide cume at 26,835,939 for the week ending Jan 3, 2009.  Well, ioi's numbers posted yesterday (week ending Nov 14) has PS3's current worldwide total sitting at 26,680,826 with only one more week of sales before Black Friday.  This means that for aligned numbers, PS3 is ahead of 360 by almost exactly one holiday sales period.  Kind of impressive coincidence, no?

yup, but people will kill you, EVEN THOUGH this is a sales discussion site and what you are doing is maths on how they are selling ect

Pretty lame really given how Ps3 was supposed to dominate 360.

Anyways it's mostly all because Japan refuses to buy an American system or American games. Thats the difference right there if not more.

Japan produces quality products and buy quality products. Why do they want go with a product which has a 60% chance of having an RROD?

I dont even pretend to understand the relevance of this.

More relevant is that there is a reasonable chance that after this holiday and the slim and the big price cut and after over 3 years of the PS3 it could still be further behind the 360 than it was when it launched... it could be... will be close I think either way....

honestly man, what makes you think the 360 is even gonna be anywhere near the ps3 this holiday? 360 isn even winning in any regions! i want a real answer, how is the 360 going to all of a sudden sell on par with the ps3, when for the past 2 months the ps3 has outsold it by 1.5 million! the ps3 has been pulling off holiday numbers since september, so imagine whats its gonna do in the actual holiday period!

I think his expectation is actually pretty realistic. PS3 will need to outsell Xbox 360 by roughly 1.5 million in the next 7 weeks to get there. US looks like it will be close either way, so it will need to get those sales from Others and Japan alone.

@solid

Did you read my post or just decide to rant?

My post actually allows for the PS3 to outsell the 360 by 1.3 million before the end of this year to still be true. I wasn't saying they would match on sales anywhere in that post..

Either the later or he read it but didn't understand what you were saying.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

@solid: To clarify, what kowenicki is saying is that overall the gap (the hard numbers, non-aligned gap) has widened from the 360's 5.3million unit head start.  Some are surprised by this, but (Wii in Japan aside), all consoles sell better in their second year so it's no surprise that the 360's second year outsold the PS3's $600 launch year.  Also, the 360's third year outsold the PS3's second year, but things were going the other way until the 360 price drop in Sept 2008.

I don't want the thread to go off the rails, though, so I'll just state outright that this is a digression from the original topic.
