Why they did it? I read posts of people saying that for MS profit was a secondary thing when they entered the gaming market. I can't see a reason to them have loss just to feed their ego.

I'm pretty sure that MS entered the gaming market for profits. People that think otherwise are fooling themselves.
I thought it was a combo platter, profitability and a cock-block on Sony in the US living room.
They aimed for long term profit. Because stupid people think short-term when they think financially and because stupid people rule the world, we got told that MS isn't in it for the profit.
Why the hell do stupid people have to be in control? Screw them I say.
(PS it is actually an important question your asking)
Of course they entered it to make a profit. They just knew they wouldn't make a profit right off of the bat. They have built an entirely new division for Microsoft so far and things are actually looking very good for them now. They have profited the last few years and the next few years will probably be even better for them.
It has often been said that they were trying to keep Sony out of the living room. While this is true, they weren't just going to through their money away with no chance of getting a return on investment. Stock holders would not have allowed for this to happen. By the end of this generation they will have probably turned a profit overall in their gaming division. Even taking into account their loss with the original xbox.

All consoles makers enter the industry for profit just like all studios make games for profit. It's not really some big secret...
They entered, because they wanted to make the world a better place as it would be with out the box- to make some profit was never M$ intention.

Profit was a longterm goal. Blocking Sony's domination of the living room was a more short term target. Having just one company own that space would have been a disaster for the consumer and the gaming industry.
Playing: Borderlands(great co-op,HUGE amount of content),Too Human(better late than never lol),Saints Row 3(Penetrator ftw),Minecraft 360,Harry Potter Lego.
Patiently waiting for: Tomb Raider, Borderlands 2
Profits doesn't have to come directly from the XBox division. I think they could have created the gaming division to keep pushing Windows OS sales. Sony was killing the PC games market with it's dominance, and they wanted to create a Japanese computer not compatible with Windows. I believe this was the real menace to Microsoft.
