Forums - Sales - Game Series that are becoming oversaturated

I'd say that any series that sees more than two releases in one generation is over-saturated.

Halo: Reach will do it for that series, unless it's a radical departure from previous Halo shooters.

Mario is pushing it pretty hard, since there are already 3 released or announced Mario platformers for the Wii. There are a lot of game design differences between SMG and NSMBW, so it's okay for now.

Call of Duty is there, the only saving grace being that it alternates developers and settings, and the usual offenders of rhythm/music games and sports games are there.

Guitar Hero, Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, old Nintendo franchises (Mario, Zelda, Metroid), any yearly sports series, etc.

Then theres games that are really close to becoming overdone (even though they still sell well) like Ratchet & Clank, Skate, Halo, GTA, etc.

I would have included Gran Turismo but they only come out every couple years usually and there hasn't been one yet this gen. There's been 3 Halo's and another coming 2010 so far this gen.

Who's saying Final Fantasy? i guess if you count all those DS remakes and Wii one? lol All im seeing for FF is FFXII -2006/07 then to FFXIII 2009/10 ...thats like 3yrs... too long! XD

Final Fantasy may not be oversaturated but it is without a doubt being milked for every penny, or more specifically, Final Fantasy VII is being milked for every penny and it's already been said they want to milk FFXIII for every penny (my words, paraphrasing).

true about FFVII...and for FFXIII, at least its just FFVII & XIII that are being milked and not really the entire franchise.

Guitar Hero, Imagine, Need for Speed, almost every sport games and SingStar. Call of Duty and GTA coming close.

According to wikipedia there's been 14 Zelda games in the main series, 11 Zelda spinoffs, and 6 remakes, that's how. I'm not saying they aren't great or don't sell well, so don't get all upset with me. Any franchise that has this many games in it I'd have to consider milked.

I based my list off of number of games/frequency of games coming out, not quality of the games.

And that's just not really what milked means.  It might be your definition, but that doesn't make it right.  For instance, I could call my table a book but that wouldn't actually make it a book.

When someone says something is being milked or oversaturated, that generally means games that have a lot of sequels within a small amount of time with little to no significant changes.  The Guitar Hero franchise could not be a better example.  Instead of the 30-ish Zelda games in the nearly 30 years of its existance, you have 20-ish Guitar Hero games in the lats five years.

A not so extreme example?  Starcraft II.  You have what should be one game split into three games so they can get more money out of it.

There's been 13 Zelda games released over 22 years, it'll be 14 when Spirit Tracks comes out next month.  There's also been real 1 remake (Japan only, download only), 5 ports, 2 spinoffs and 5 digital reissues on the Virtual Console.  That's a total of 21 retail releases over 22 years.

There's been 5 GT games over 11 years (it'll be 6 in March).  1 spinoff, 3 Prologues, 4 Concepts (one digital only). That's a total of 13 retail releases over 12 years.

There's been 4 Halo games released over 8 years, it'll be 5 in 9 years next fall.  There's also been 3 ports, 1 spinoff, and 2 digital reissues via Xbox Originals. That's a total of 9 retail releases over 9 years.

There's been 8 Rachet & Clank games over 8 years.  There's also been 1 spinoff and 2 ports.  That's a total of 11 retail releases over 8 years.

There's been 3 Skate games over 3 years (it'll be 4 in May).  There's also been 3 ports (will be 4 in May) and a mobile game.  That's a total of 8 retail releases in 3 years.

There's been 4 GTA games over 12 years.  There's also been 9 "expansions" (2 digital, though 1 retail release combining them), 16 ports and a tn of mobile games and digital reissues.  That's 28 retail releases over 12 years.

That's a definition I can agree with. So definitely music games (GH and RB).

According to that then Call of Duty really isn't that bad since for the most part they make big improvements on previous games. If it had continued to be WWII every time it would definitely be oversaturated though.
