Forums - Microsoft - Project Natal wins the Popular Science Home Entertainment Grand Award

A year before release? Seems a bit premature to give something an award for home entertainment when no one has it in their homes yet.

Why?  Pop Science is a magazine that is always looking for cool new things that are just around the corner.  If they wait until people have these then they will behind the times and no one would buy their mag.

How exactly is that going to start a problem?  Microsoft has proven that they will get AAA software one way or the other.  And to be honest, they have the best lineup this generation (IMO).  With even better stuff just on the horizon.  So I will ask you again, how is this going to be a problem?

But nobody has seen the end product and the idea has been done before. Xbox already has camera games. I guess they have to give it to somebody.

Go Team Venture! I still don't get the Wii, PS Move,  and Kinect.

Yes but noone has done this for home entertainment before. Yes N64 had a camera. Yes we had PSEye. But Natal is something much more advanced and intuitive. If you cant see that, well I'm lost.

Prove it. It doesn't exist yet.But the other things do including a soon to obsolete camera by the same company. They are getting an award on a promise and screwing people who already bought their hardware.

How are they screwing people who already bought there hardware? All I have to do is pay £40 and I have Natal when it's released. Or if you dont have a 360 get the 360+Natal package. Also many many people have played it. Including Kojima ( MGS producer ) who loved it!

They are not supporting the peripheral that they sold the person because they made a new one that got an award, Of course Sony &Microsoft never supported these things but 1/2 way into this gen they become important? Why care about it now? Much of what Natal will be used for is possible now.

Have to agree with you Sigma. MS might be screwing themselves over with all this hype. Of what I've seen, the games are slightly advanced PSEye games. Only real difference is that your character is replaced with an avatar, instead of you seeing yourself on screen. A lot of this stuff has or can be done on other systems with the right software. Unfornately these things are never really supported the way they should be. Hopefully that will change. But I still see some disappointment on the way after it's released and the majority of games are a bunch of quickie casual games.

Selnor you seriously think Natal will be that cheap? I know speculations have put it at $50-$80, but I highly doubt it will be that cheap. Especially if it as advanced as MS is touting it is, with a built in processor to free up the power of the 360. I mean look at their other hardware for comparison. Their wireless adaptor only just recently dropped to $80, but you can get plenty of those for under $30 for a PC. Their 120 GB HDD is $135, even though it's a normal HDD in a custom case. You can purchase a 500GB HDD for the same price. So yeah, I'm guessing it's going to be least in the $100-150 range.

This reminds me of the early PS2 days, when they started creating this astronomical hype. I remember them even talking about it not being sold to Korea because of its computing power enabling them to launch missiles, and Steven Spielberg saying something along the lines of movies being made on par with the PS2 and vice versa. This strategy works when you do it well.

Maybe you can fake and make some suggestions that are far out there, but if you're confident the technology you're introducing can eventually do the things you're promising, then you'll have a hit. At first people will be a little disappointed, but there is always an urge to hold onto the promise if you exagerate enough and don't make any big mistakes.

It was this way with the Wii remote, and the PS2's graphics. It didn't work for the PS3 because they screwed up the pricing relative to their goals, but it's the same technique. They didn't have the product at E3 2005, but what they promised was well ahead of people's imagination. I mean do you still remember the FFVII video? I do.

It's definitely a risk, but it's worth it when it works. You know, I have a feeling they're gonna make Natal work for sure though. This is important technology in a New Global Order sense, they're not gonna let it fail.

Now MS has to capitalize on this buzz with some good software.

And here will probaby start the problems...

Fable III
Milo
Riccochet
Paint Party
2 / 3 Rare games

there you go.

People said the exact same thing when the first Xbox launched. MS has not enough studios for the software etc. Every now and then somebody comes up with the same argument even for the X360.

Milo isnt a game. i for one think this motion stuff is gonna be ...mediocre.
