Zen; I was referring to the instrumental and epic pieces of videogame music, such as they one I posted. I fully realize that J-pop is Japanese mainstream music, the name is a dead giveaway even if I were clueless otherwise...
And about opinions; it is your opinion that Leona Lewis is a good artist and that her songs are memorable while I despise RnB and most other pop music because I simply find it bland, uninspired and painfully similar and dull sounding. Hip-hop is even worse, with every song sounding the exact same to me.
I've heard many songs from Lewis and I haven't latched onto a single note in any one of them (I've worked jobs where mostly all I can do to make time pass is listen to the radio...) and the fact that she's won awards really does nothing to impress upon me her fabulous talent. This reminds me of all the times I've mentioned how I hate Crysis despite it being a very highly rated game, how can I not enjoy a game with good scores after all?
And popularity do not equal quality, the Twilight books are hardly well written and there are tons of games that sell heaps that are... not very good.
Anyways; the music I was talking about was the (sometimes) brilliant tunes and melodies we get from videogames (the adventure era on PC is also the father of many masterpieces, such as the theme song of Gabriel Knight: Sins of thy Father) and not Japanese popmusic, I can really stand to not listen to that with its whiny vocals and plastic sound. But its the message, like I said. Perhaps the Valve example was a poor one, but I can see trouble looming over one of my all time favourite game franchises none the less in the very near future.
There's a real tendency in here sometimes to start a "contest" over whose opinion has the most merit and it kind of defies my logic to try to convince someone that something is good simply because you think it is yourself and/or because it is popular and has won awards or recieved a lot of good press. We all have different tastes, this entire site would have never existed if we didn't and to me, RnB and Hip-Hop and most pop music today is commercial drivel with no love or soul (the same way rock music is just noise to people who don't like it).
Its not even so bad that its good (like the old Xena, Hercules and Sindbad TV shows), its just plain bad (imho).
