Forums - Nintendo - Change in Sales Game of the Day (11/14) - Pokémon Diamond/Pearl

Pineapple said:

If there's one thing we've seen this generation, it's that major games have increased in sales, and minor games have decreased. Pokemon was, up until this generation, the most major of them all.

The actual Pokemon growth is far larger than this comparison shows.

This gen, we're looking at

Diamond/Pearl - 18 million

HeartGold/SoulSilver - 10 million + (?)

Platinum - 7 - 9 million

Spinoffs - 16 million

Last gen:

 Ruby - 15 million

FireRed/Leaf Green - 10 million

Emerald - 6 million

Spinoffs - 1 million

By the end of the generation, there should have been sold at least 25 million more Pokemon games this gen, than last gen. That's near a double in sales.

By spinoff, do you mean the handheld titles?  I'm sure Colosseum, Channel, Box: Ruby and Sapphire and XD: Gale of Darkness sold more than a million combined.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Aye, Handhelds only.

Can anybody help me out? I'm wanting to make a chart comparing the sales of Pokemon to the sales of the handheld they are on, but because the orignial Gameboy and Gameboy Color are counted the same it is difficult. First, I can't remember, I know that Gameboy games are playable on the Gameboy Color, but could Gameboy Color games be played on the original Gameboy? If not, does anybody have a link to information about the sales of the Gameboy and Gameboy Color separated?

^^^Gold/Silver were playable on original GB but Crystal was not.

Another interesting point is that Yellow was released as a GB game but had colour when used with GBC.

Thanks impur1ty that helps a lot.
I had both the original GB and GBC, but I just couldn't remember. I also got really confused looking at the game database when it said that Yellow was for the original GB, but it was the only Pokemon game I've every owned and I thought I had played it in color, but then thought maybe I just couldn't remember.

I did't get the article posted this weekend like I thought, so hopefully later today. But I could still use more votes and comments, there are so few comments still that anybody who posts a well reasoned comment will have a good chance of it being included in the article.

Pokemon is, undoubtedly, Nintendo's ultimate handheld system seller. Considering the popularity of the DS compared to the GBA, its no surprise that Diamond/Pearl increased in sales compared to Ruby/Saphphire.
When people think of Nintendo, they think Mario and Pokemon.
