Forums - Gaming - Online Multiplayer Killing FPS Single Playe Campaigns ?

It would be silly to expect a company to focus on SP when FPS players mostly desire good MP. As someone else said, most of my friends that play FPS don't even touch the single player campaigns (I myself didn't start CoD 4's until a few months ago).

As for someone's remark about RPGs, I don't think I agree. In terms of non-MMOs, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, you mentioned Dragon Age, these are some great, recent RPGs (even if Tales has some MP, I doubt you could say they focused heavily on it) with great stories.

Also, plenty of MMOs bring in loads of cash, even if they aren't nearly as successful as WoW. Low Server Maintenance and post-development costs coupled with high subscription fees, and/or in-game item shops generate a lot of revenue.

MP is all the rage, it's more fun to play games with friends than to play alone (this may not apply to everyone, but most people feel that way, especially casual gamers). I think it's great that companies focus on that. Don't get me wrong, I like a good story/campaign as well, but I don't look to FPS for those. Rpgs, movies, books, etc. typically have better stories/characters than I've seen in shooters. But hey, that's just me.

Yeah, it sucks for people like me that don't actually like multiplayer. For some reason every game *must* have multiplayer these days so time is taken away from SP to put it in.

I was watching the Gametrailers review last night for Torchlight and the game actually got dinged for not having multiplayer!

I think you have a point, and it varies by title, but overall my feeling is that in many titles the MP has received far more focus than the SP. I love a long, detailed SP campaign with a good plot, so I too miss when this was the standard.

I played through Half Life 2 again recently, and it really struck me just how extensive, slick and varied its SP campaign was vs recent FPS SP titles.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Reasonable; I play through HL 2 at least twice a year, it is actually THAT GOOD!

There is one thing I miss in most games, the multiplayer I like the most; cooperative play! There should be heaps more of that, can't be that hard to implement if you're building an extensive SP campaign and a full and varied MP part? (I realize it'd have to be in the core design of the game though but coop is a huge selling point, especially in FPS and RPG games).

Online does ruin single player in a lot of games. It's killing TPS single player as well.

The best games are the ones that have both killer single player and multiplayer...

I might have been with you on the SP part up until the final few chapters when they started throwing the guardians into the mix.  I was loving the game until about chapter 23-25 (forget which one I stopped having a lot of fun) and just made me not want to bother with the single player ever again.  That and a shitty final boss.

Yes, and it has been happening for years now.
