Forums - Website Topics - 'Platform slamming' rules should apply to developers/games equally?

We should all know by now what platform slamming is and what happens when you get caught (ban). Comments like:

  • The Wii doesn't sell 3rd party software.
  • The Xbox 360 is a POS fail box.
  • The PS3 sucks.... on something.

But the real question is why doesn't this same standard apply to game developers as well?

Whenever a game developer gets slammed in a way which would egender a ban/warning if targeted at a console platform its usually because:

  • The developer is attacked as stand in for a console manufacturer because its exclusive and/or.
  • The post has an axe to grind with the developer or the people who like the game and/or.
  • The poster is trying to start something.

Most people are usually pretty good when faced with reasonable opinions. However often this bad behaviour leads to tit for tat trolling behaviour which tends to slide easier due to the less specific nature of the rules surrounding this issue.

  • Killzone 2
  • Halo 3
  • Metal Gear Solid IV
  • Forza 3
  • GT5

For example, if Halo 3 wasn't trolled so heavily then perhaps Killzone 2 wouldn't have been. If the issue can at least be cleared up to the same extent that the term 'exclusive' was defined I believe it could go long way to help make the moderators job easier and Vgchartz better at the same time. I believe this is probably the last major issue to address here at Vgchartz in relation to rules/terms of use.

Edit:

  • Garnett, Ironman, Squilliam for
  • 6 others not supporting or not sure.

I really thought when I saw the thread title that this would be about Valve badmouthing the PS3 (after the period when they weren't doing that: see my sig).

Bashing devs/games is often a way people use to bash a console, I agree.  However, if the issue is a dev being bashed because of their platform bashing comments, open season.  This also applies to ND saying a game couldn't be done the same way on 360: it isn't nearly as abrasive as what Valve has been saying, but I wish they'd stay above comments like that.  In the same way, Turn 10 opens themselves to criticism when they open their mouths about GT.

The only danger I see here is that as list of bannable organizations grows, it becomes harder to enforce rules and conversation gets choked off as a result.

Not saying I'm opposed (personally, I'd like to see Apple smack-talk curtailed), just raising the problems of extending ban protection beyond the major hardware manufacturers.

Theres a difference between bashing a platform and criticising the platform holder. The former can yield a ban whilst the latter is perfectly within the rules. In the case of Valve, its fine to criticise them for what you perceive to be negative remarks IMO but it does go too far when it degrades into simply slamming them eg "Valve games suck balls" or something equivalent which wouldn't be tolerated if the remark was directed towards a platform holder.

I just want the same protection for developers/games because it keeps the noise level down and if you're willing to take the time to spell out why you don't like something then you're much more likely to be heard if people on both sides are being calmer and stay within rules which everyone should be familiar with by now.

So whilst this was set off by the recent Valve critcism/abuse it has been an issue which has bothered me for a while.

On second thought, I'd like to see a 200 posts thread full of people who got banned because they called Gabe Newell fat.

Not sure I like the idea in general, though. The more constraints we put on conversation....

Again Valve never said anything bad about the PS3, they said it was a mess at launch and was it not? He never said "PS3 SLIM SUCKS 360 FTW!!!" or anything like that, its just because L4D2 is a console"exclusive" that you guys all of a sudden hate him, no one was saying shit when TF2 came out on PS3 and 360, but now that the enemy gets an AAA exclusive there fat and lazy.

I agree Squilly,I think the rule should apply.

I dont think we should keep on adding rules.

.. But hey, gold plated ps3

Check out my game about moles ^

Unless you provide a example of a developer/game being unfairly bashed( pick a real good one too not one based on just ur own interpretation ),...ill have to disagree. On this site usaully when a developer is gettin bashed...they said/did something stupid and most likely asked for it
