Mario in HD? Hmmm...
There. Mario in glorious (HAH!) 1080p. Sorry Soriku, but your point makes no sense.
Nintendo (nor any company) is not obligated to change the artistic style of their games or make them realistic to make them HD. It's gonna be great to see Mario, Kirby, Miis in HD on next Nintendo's console... or even in the Wii, if they ever unlock HD resolutions.
Honestly I see what your concerned about. What about characters like Pokemon who are supposed to have fur but up untill now they have just used a plasticky texture. How will Pikachu look like? will he have fur like he's supposed too? Or will Nintendo continue to use that plasticky texture.
As for Mario I can see alot of room for visual improvement. His pants his shirt his cap his hair it can all be improved. No you don't need to change his cartoony appearance to improve him to better suit HD.
Kirby, true if they try to make him realistic adding fur and other stuff they could ruin Kirby. But much Like Pokemon will Nintendo actually seek improving the characters visual appeal or will they stick to their plasticy textures.
As for third parties, being forced to support HD will bring up dev costs considerably. Nintendo however will likely keep the next consoles dev costs down only slightly improving on PS3's visuals. I bet you Nintendo will still be the cheaper console to support as well as sport truly next gen graphics!

I'm not sure you understand how HD works...
In short HD doesn't necessarily equal photo-realism. Cartoons can be made HD too without the characters suddenly looking like real people.

My thoughts exactly vagabond...Mario's not going to look like Tony Danza when he makes the jump to HD.
I was thinking more of Tom Selleck, Mario P.I...Higgins Can be player 2.

For cartoons like Kirby it means more pixels and smoother edges...thats about it. Its part of the reason games like SMG look fine already, because the current resolution is fine for those things (on non-gigantic TVs).
Basically with Kirby you have will be getting better lines and more pink pixels =P
Its when you start going for extreme detail and photorealism that huge resolutions and complex shading and lighting techniques are needed. This is why Nintendo understood that when it comes to graphical appeal you don't need just raw unadulterated graphics power but art direction, palette direction, and a deep understanding of the way shapes, colors, shadows, and lights all effect a persons perception of the mood and atmosphere of a game.
In essence, with a little thought put behind all of these choices you will often find that less is more when it comes to graphics.
I think SSBB is supposed to be the last Smash Bros game... that's why it is going to have everything in it so that its not possible for a better smash bros game to be made.
ummm....did you mean to put that in this topic Origin?
