Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 price cut coming soon??

While the console war is not over, the TREND that is happening now- if europe ps3 sales follow the japan and us sales... if the sales trend of the current cycle continues with no significant changes in the sales world wide, the Wii will pass the xbox360 with the largest installed base of the 3 new consoles imo ~17 million world wide total the xbox will be 2nd at around 14 million units sold the ps3 will be 3rd at around 7 million units sold (europe depending) IF this trend stays the way it is...ps3 will be in almost no position to gain the majority share of the market for atleast the next 3 years. as to price drops, not going to happen til around xmas -if then

To me it's very hard to predict how the PS3 will due long term because we've never had the most dominant name in video games put out an expensive and very technolically heavy system system like the PS3. Obviously price cuts will be important, but at most I see a $50 price cut this year. Sony will accept third place for the forseable future, hope it closes the gap in monthly sales between the other two, and probably try to make a killing in 2008 with more major price cuts, and hyped up marketing over a lineup that will probably be mcuh better than what we get in 2007.
People who are saying it is over for sony are doing so because the strategy you mentioned simply can not work... Suppose Sony finished 2007 with a total userbase of 8 Million units, while the XBox 360 and Wii finish with 16 to 20 Million units each; the result of this would be that most publishers which focused on the North American or European markets would be forced to target either the Wii or XBox 360, for the Japaneese (or worldwide) market they would be forced to target the Wii. What happens to a system when all it gets are ports from other systems and very little exclusive attention from third parties? That's right it stops selling ...

As I menioned before in this thread, you can't look at whether a price cut is coming or what it will do to the PS3 without considering Sony's weak finances at the moment. They've put themselves into a catch-22, they can't afford to keep losing money in video games, to make money they need to sell more systems, to sell more systems they need to cut the price which will cause them to lose even more money over the short term. Especially since cutting the price may not boost sales if MS and Nintendo follow suit and would only lose even more money. Over the long term they could just ride out this storm, wait for cost to come down, and hope (which is all it would be) to come back from behind in 2009. Unfortunately for Sony they probably dont have the finances to do that and would be risking the entire company if they decided to find out if they did.

It has been a very slow start for the PS3, but this is solely down to cost.  Sony will put pressure on PS3 developers and will push to get BluRay players produced for rock bottom prices.

They will hope that the forthcoming PS3 games and potential BluRay popularity will push for more PS3 sales over the remainder of the year.  The big period is Xmas and they will hopefully see:

a) a decent increase in sales

b) a large selection of quality titles

c) vastly reduced costs for PS3 components (inc. BluRay player)

So that they can make the huge decision at Xmas to reduce the cost to bring in the huge customer base.

The Wii will have a pretty big customer base over the next few years, but the longevity of the system is in question.  The PS3 can have a huge lifespan and may take another 2 years to start building up the customer base, but this won't be a problem seeing as the hardware will easily last for a long, long time.

One problem is the PS3 is much more expensive than the 360 and Wii at the moment...it's double the price of the basic 360 and IMHO needs to drop $100 or thereabouts at least in the next 12 months with a further $100+ drop to happen within the following 12 months from that.
