I would sell your broken PS3, especially if it's a BC one which I believe that is. You can still get anywhere from $75-100 for that on eBay.

Use that money to buy a slim. It sucks that you'll lose your BC but meh.

Give it to Soriku or Zexen

I'd keep it personally if its a 60GB or 20GB version. I really care about the BW compatibility though, I don't even know where any of my 2 or 3 PS2s are these days (I had multiples for FFXI back in the day).

If it is a partial BW compatibility one (like the 80GB) I'd still prob keep it, but might just get a slim. Any of the newer ones just sell it and get a slim.

I would certainly not do anything that involves not having a PS3. All the best games of the last year are either on the PS3 or PS3 exclusive. I'd hate to be on the outside looking in on Demon Souls, Uncharted 2 and the rest.

If you're feeling generous, give it to Zexen. Otherwise sell it and get a slim.

VGChartz you just decided the fate of my PS3, thank you for your opinions and answers to this subject. and for the rec i would have really given my PS3 to soriku or zexen there both worthy and really need one each. yes soriku = Versus XIII and Zexen = PlayStation Fan but Alas... sorry guys.
