Forums - Sony - Sony: The Dumbest Guys in the Room

The BDA is the entity that owns blu-ray. We don't even know if that is profitable yet. And if it is, the money is divided amongst the partner companies.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

1) It seems that Netflix on PS3 is more of a move from Netflix, rather than SONY. Sony are supporting their own Video store on PSN, so I'm thinking SONY are probably getting some sort of Royalty fee payment out of the movies sold by Neflix on PS3.

2) Said it before and I'll say it again. THe PSPGO isn't a fuckin relaunch. It's SONY giving customers another option. One that's clearly a more profitable one for them. If it was a relaunch, the PSP3000 wouldn't be here.

3) The PS3 was made to establish new technology for future projects [also ones including the PS brand]. It was made to help IBM's Cell, Rambus' XDR and BDA's Blu-Ray to gain some earlier ground. AND IT's BEEN WORKING. Bluray won the format war and is expanding well. Major manufacturers like Toshiba and a few others are looking at, manufacuring or already selling Cell based computers and home electronics like HDTV's. not sure what's going on in XDR front. New tech means new development tactics developers had to use. It's not harder, just different. Many dev's have been saying this. There are just a few dev that don't want to learn new dev tactics and just go with the the familiar 360/PC layout and claim it's because the PS3 is too much work.

4) MS are the only ones charging for online. SONY's revenue from ads, PSStore and Royalty fees. Free Online is also considered one of the major advantages to owning a PS3 over a 360, which helps to bring in customers.

5) We still have quite some time before the controller launches... don't freak just yet.

Everything you mentioned has both positives and negatives to it. Some can be seen as advantages or disadvantages. Depends on what SONY plans to do, which you don't know...

I agreee with this

I think you're the only one that read my post...

Wow, everybody is missing the point that the OP is making.
Sony has made some bad business decisions and are now paying for it. I wouldn't say that "Sony is the dumbest guy in the room" Sony chose to give away stuff for free, great, they thought it would attract more customers and give them a leg up over the competition...and you know what, if I was in Sony's shoes, I would have done the same thing. But due to the PS3 being an overpriced over bloated( tech wise) machine, less people bought it that was anticipated. And now Sony is bleeding. They are relying on brand name to carry them through, and as it has been proven, you can't do that anymore.

I'll tell it from the perspective of someone who owns all of the consoles.

The 360 has great online, and I pay 50 bucks a year for it.

The PS3 and Wii have free online gaming.

I pay 50 bucks a year for online gaming for the PS3, 360, and Wii.

That's a great deal, and I'm one happy camper.

Cool! I pay €50 a year for online gaming for the ps3, 360, wii and PC, sunshine and the right to run around in circles whenever I feel like it. Bargain!

1.  Adding Netflix to the Playstation 3 for free.

2.  Ensuring that the PSP relaunch was a disaster by following the same idiotic pricing mindset

3.  Stating that they purposely made the Playstation 3 harder to develop for.

4.  Giving away online for free.

5.  Allowing both Nintendo and Microsoft to be in the media spotlight over their motion control schemes

--------------------

Sony's non-game divisions need to be separated from the game division, which has performed well and done everything it needed to do. More specifically:

1. Not Sony's fault. Consumers asked for it, and got it.

2. The Go is not a relaunch. It's a niche product for a mostly Japanese/European audience.

3. The PS3 isn't that hard to develop for. Good developers are extracting amazing performance from the machine.

4. Online should be free. Microsoft's strategy is the last gasp of PC monopolist thinking.

5. Microsoft was completely flatfooted by the Wii, Sony less so.

That said, I would like to see Samsung enter the videogame market. Microsoft just isn't up to the task of keeping Sony honest; we need a smart, aggressive, new player to shake things up.

Can i ask the mods why these blatent flamebait threads are not being closed please?.

Its not about milking its about business sense, and Sony has very little apparently, its not about giving things away from free or not, its about doing things that don't hurt you.

Part of the reason the PS3 is doing so badly is they focused so heavily on Blu-ray, if they hadn't put it in and focused on games, they might be in second place instead of MS and making a profit, but by pushing it, they ended up in last and are still losing money on the PS3.

Oh so its a bad thing that I have the option of watching Blu-ray movies using my game console.

And giving away Netflix is all well and good for the consumer, but after killing your gaming division by sticking in Blu-Ray, now you're going to give it free competition by offering one of the things that is killing Blu-Ray, talk about really bad decisions.

Oh so its regrettable that I can now watch netflix streaming as well as blu-ray movies and for no extra fee.

The PSP Go was a horrible decision, yeah lets release a gimped version of our Handheld, for more than our other version, which can do the exact same stuff and more. Heck the lack of software on the PSP from day one has been a problem, for some reason Sony got so focused on the Hardware, that they forgot the PSP and PS3 need to be gaming systems first.

Right so you mean the PS3 doesn't really have many games to play. This is a really tired old logic, you should come with something new.

Now look at Nintendo, they've made tons of smart decisions, that even now, in a down year, they are still making mad amounts of Money, even MS, has finally made the Xbox profitable, and the thing is MS can actually afford to waste money, because they still make gobs of profits in their other divisions, Sony can't, as they are getting beat across the board.

Oh so I am so sad that I don't have to pay for over-priced accesories, wifi, online and ya no blu-ray.

Sony better get smart or the PS4 may be the last console from them.

wouldn't you be one happy camper?

Its wonderful how you keep tap dancing from a business POV to a consumer POV just so long as you can keep up your Sony bashing.

^Its a bad Idea when it makes your system $600, and still selling at a loss

For the company that killed its marketshare and profits to push Blu-Ray, yes it is

At launch it didn't

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Well yes, this is absolutely true. Although is Sony's defense, they thought they were setting themselves up to collect on Bluray in the future...then along came digital distribution...which is something that nobody could have seen at the time.
