Whether it be in real life, or on the interwebz, people seem to boast about PS3 sales in Japan. Usually in effort to knock the 360.
Just for the record, are people aware how PS3 is actually doing in comparison to past consoles? I mean the lets look at Japan numbers over the years I found here at VGChartz.
SNES - 16,701,578
Sega Saturn - 5,718,628
PS1 - 19,362,986
Nintendo 64 - 5,377,174
Dreamcast - 2,232,028
PS2 - 22,998,282
Gamecube - 4,024,279
Xbox - 477,809
Now I remember from reading old articles the Sega Saturn was considered somewhat of a hit in Japan. Too bad it had far less success outside of Japan. The N64 was financially successful, but it didn't recieve the past success previous Nintendo consoles did in Japan for various reasons. The N64 didn't even manage to outsell the Saturn.
The PS3 is struggliing to catch up with the likes of the Gamecube, Saturn, and N64. None of which were huge in Japan nor did they lose billions in the process. Saturn was the only financial failure with $267.9 million lost according to Wikipedia.
Also, if you look at the Japanese software sales on this site of the Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, and Gamecube. They're considerably better than the PS3 has been getting so far.
Now I didn't make this thread just to bash the PS3. I'm just a little tired of hearing how great the PS3 is doing in Japan. When in reality there isn't much to boast about. Granted the 360 is doing poorly in Japan. Nevertheless, software sales aren't bad considering the tiny userbase. And ofcourse MS consoles have never had much of following in Japan. Sony on the otherhand has had epic sales in the past.
