Forums - Sales - What if the X360 and PS3 launched at the same time?

Where are you getting your numbers?? Not from VGChartz:

Seeing as how since both systems being released at the same time would have had a much different outcome on sales, why not compare holiday sales of 06' and 07'. You have to keep in mind of how many people who were buying a PS3 on release day probably already had a 360 from the previous year, or had some bad experience with one system over another, or, simply wanted a Wii over the PS3.

Where as, if the PS3 was released alongside the 360 in 2005, the wii would have been no where in sight... There's a lot of things to consider since numbers would have been waaaay different. They wouldn't have matched at all.

You've also got to remember that by the time you bought a launch 360 with wifi, a second controller, a game, and HDMI with Live, you're over the 600 dollars of the PS3... which at least has wifi... but, like i said, this is nothing more than a comparison of launch numbers, not a guesstimate on if the two launched at the same time.

Wait, wha?

How did you get the software numbers? Didn't you just add up the totals of all the software?

The initial ~5 million 360 owners did not simply stop buying software once the PS3 came out. In fact, many of them ended up buying Gears of War, for example. Look at Gears of War sales to see what I mean:

1 34,231 606,759 269,941 910,931
2 7,214 301,998 156,566 465,778
3 4,105 214,870 131,515 350,490
4 3,113 192,201 110,517 305,831
5 2,701 214,548 115,769 333,018
6 1,920 234,192 95,241 331,353
7 1,333 245,791 37,476 284,600
8 1,016 89,066 24,347 114,429
9 999 76,295 25,541 102,835
10 935 54,771 19,573 75,279

These numbers would have been impossible to achieve without the 5 million console lead. Gears of War sold about 4mil copies in its first 10 weeks. The 360 sold under 3 million in this time period.

^ point taken. yes, i agree.

well, as i said in the OP, the numbers are rough. i mean, if i were to make calculations that included that idea you have, i'll never finish.

So he's comparing years 2,3,4 for the 360 and 1,2,3 for the PS3?  How is that useful at all?

There's another problem with the argument that has to do with software and momentum. By 2006 360 had an instalbase and titles like gears coming out. You can't pit PS3's weakest year software wise against a 360 which was heating up. PS3's 2006 to 360's 2005 is the only way to do it.

Well done. I like it. Lol the choices are do you want to spend your life savings on a PS3 or do you want Red Ring of Death with 360.

I think someone has looked at this sort of thing, like in this thread: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=66975

Basically, each console owner is more or less equal when it comes to how often they purchase games. I imagine the 360 would do a little better if there was no RRoD (should be the case, if they took until 2006 to release).

Either way I can't see this comparison being "fair" (or easy), there are too many factors involved.

Why the weird and wack rules? Simply compare the 2 consoles sales after 3 years on the market: 26M for PS3 22 for 360.
