Forums - General - Congratulations to David Haye

I've absolutely no interest in boxing but he's a Brit and I will always support my home team or competitor.

Haye shocks Valuev to take crown

Haye found it difficult to get close to his giant opponent

Britain's David Haye beat giant Russian Nikolay Valuev on points to be crowned WBA heavyweight champion in Nuremberg.

The Londoner, who gave away seven stone to his opponent, started steadily but struggled to land any telling hits.

However, Haye kept working hard and almost knocked over the Russian with a powerful punch in the final round.

But Haye, 29, won a majority victory by 114-114 116-112 116-112 to become Britain's first world heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2003.

Haye, 29, carried a record of 22 wins (21KOs) and one defeat into the contest against the 7ft champion, who had also suffered just one defeat in his 52 fights with a total of 34 knockouts.

"I think I've almost certainly broken my hand but it's a small price to pay," Haye told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I caught him with a right in the second or third and let me tell you his head is solid, it felt like a brick. I just couldn't use it from there on in.

"Here I am, heavyweight champion of the world and I'm loving it. I'm going to clean up the division."

After just reading about Haye and what a mouthy insulting git he has been I might have been rooting for Valuev as well.

But I guess the pre fight verbal abuse is part of boxing.

I really wanted some proper fighting and punching. What i got was some overweight man slowly walking around the ring and a in comparison small man dancing.

He is trending on twitter

This is reminiscent of the Spanish armarda.
