Forums - General - By 2011, a Majority of Judges in Lebanon Will Be Women

http://nowlebanon.com/NewsArticleDetails.aspx?ID=124575

Last Sunday, Judge Joyce Tabet took office as the deputy prosecutor-general for the international tribunal on the assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri. Tabet is just one recent example of the rising number of women working in Lebanon’s judicial system. According to a UNDP figure, 42% of all judges in Lebanon were women a few years ago, and by the year 2011, 60% will be women. Although Lebanon is, without a doubt, a country ruled by men, it is has increasingly become one judged by women.

Yes, that's Lebanon in the Middle East. It's an Arab country that's about 60% Muslim. Pretty stark difference from other countries in the region where women's rights are non-existant.

I was typing something and then said to myself "why bother?"

all you do is hate on arabic countries (more specifically muslims) every oppurtinity you get. I don't appreciate these stabs you pull out of your ass every week. Yeah you hide it well behind a story or headline, but it always comes down to "lets hate on the muslims again".

Why don't you do yourself a favor and disappear for another year.

How am I hating on Arab countries? I'm speaking positively of Lebanon, an Arab country with a majority Muslim population...

The sad state of women's rights in many countries in the middle east is a fact not a bias, read any objective report to see how unequal society is in some parts of the world.

I have no major problems with Islam or other religions, but with the people who use them to opress women or other segments of society and/or use religion as an excuse to launch war and attacks on innocent people.

I have no problem with the people of Iran, other than those that are contributing to the theocratic dictatorship and taking away the rights of others and threatening their neighbors.

No problem with most of the people in Afghanistan, except the Taliban and other fundamentalists, same with Saudi Arabia (And the authoritarian rule of the Saudi royal family).

No problem with people in Lebanon, except again the religious extremists (including Christians who killed Muslims in the Lebanese civil war) and am stating this article as proof that Lebanon is a country progressing towards equality between men and women.

Historically, women have been second class citizens, but in recent times there has been progress on this front and this is another example of that advance in a region that still includes many countries where society treats women badly.
