Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why New Super Mario Bros. Wii WILL NOT sell 11 million in less than a year.

Although NSMB Wii doesn't have the advantage of MK Wii's wheel, it does have the advantage of a larger userbase. Also, it's the main holiday game of 2009, so it'll probably reach near 7mil from November / December alone. An extra 4mil from there on is cake.

I said "near 7mil" here, though it'll end up just over 8mil.

I blame Japan, it wasn't supposed to sell like the biggest console game ever there!

Going back to your initial post, I don't see how the wheel is an advantage in any way for Mario Kart.  That's not to take anything away from NSMBWii either.

Although it's just a piece of plastic, I'm thinking it makes the consumer feel like they're getting more for their money. The fact that you get a game and a piece of hardware for the cost of a normal game is pretty cool.

Then again, Mario Kart probably needs this advantage to compete with 2D Mario (see SNES, DS).

^ True. I didn't think of it in those terms - adding to the overall value of the package.

I am not sure if you can really say that a frisbee which doesn't work properly adds value to the package.

Perceived value, rather - I should say.  Which is what c0rd was getting at.

Frisbee? Damn, Wii Wheel is the only proper control method for MKWii.

It's not that much of having the wheel in the package as it is about the wheel and the game working together. The perceived value of the wheel is value over other racing games on Wii, not over other games. Though, Madagascar Karts, Ferrari Challenge, F1 2009 and that GT Pro or what was it called, comes with a wheel aswell.

To prove OP wrong

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Land

If you add up all if Super Mario Bros 2 sales, you'll see that every 2D Mario game has sold over 10 million. New Super Mario Bros Wii has already sold 6 million in little ver a month. It would be silly to think that it could not break 11 million as almost every 2D Mario game (on it's first release) has broken 10 million and most have broken 11. New Super Mario Bros on the DS outsold Super Mario Bros 3. This will likely end up like Mario Kart where the Wii version beats the DS one.

well it's blatantly obvious now. It's gonna be at 8 million when this weeks numbers come in. Still a LONG ways to go before a year passes since it launched.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
