There's currently a betting thread about this issue here on VGC and believe it or not, some people actually think that NSMB Wii won't pass the 11m mark within a year. Well, one of them also bought Happy Feet for the Wii. May god help him. Anyway, enough with the insults and on to the topic at hand. Here are five excellent reasons why NSMB Wii will sell 11m copies within its first year:
1. Nintendo is convinced that it will - Nintendo plans to ship 10m copies by the end of March 2010, that means 10m in less than five months. NSMB Wii is their big holiday title, so expect a big marketing campaign for this game. It will be hard to not know about this game's existence.
Nintendo was also convinced Wii would have sold a lot in 2009
2. The game looks and plays great - Good word of mouth is essential for a game having long legs and that requires a game to be awesome. What we have seen from this game so far was fantastic and the impressions from people who have played it were overwhelmingly positive, so NSMB Wii should show up at the top of the sales charts for many months, if not years. Just like the DS game.
Looks average and plays awesome, sadly legs will cut in SMG2 release
3. Animal Crossing's performance is irrelevant - Some people think that NSMB Wii could falter just like Animal Crossing: City Folk, despite following a 10m seller success on the DS. What these people forget is that Animal Crossing on the Gamecube wasn't a big hit, while 2D Mario has a long track record of successful games on home consoles and handhelds. What we can learn from AC is that the concept of the game is much better suited for handhelds than consoles, much like Monster Hunter. On the other hand, Mario platformers always work, no matter what platform they are on.
Agree
4. NSMB on the DS sold almost 10m within its first year - This was the first true 2D Mario platformer after Super Mario World about 15 years before it. If after such a long time 2D Mario can still sell such an amazing amount of copies, it tells us one thing: the game concept is still as popular as in the 8- and 16-bit generations. With 2D Mario being brought back to people's attention, NSMB Wii should enjoy even greater sales, especially because it comes with a four player multiplayer mode.
Almost
5. Mario Kart Wii destroyed Mario Kart DS in sales - This is the DS/Wii comparison everyone should look at. Both, Mario Kart and 2D Mario platformers, have long track records of being successful regardless of the platform they are on. Mario Kart Wii was pretty much everything that Mario Kart DS was, but had one big advantage: getting local multiplayer started is much easier on the Wii. Instead of four DS systems and everyone owning the game (sharing only gives you eight out of 32 tracks and shy guys as drivers in a default cart for people who don't have the game), you only need one Wii, one game and four Wiimotes. NSMB Wii even has two additional advantages: It's now for four players instead of just two and there's also co-operative play instead of only versus.
Mario Kart Wii released in Wii peak year...
"But what about online play?" Totally overrated. Look at the Wii's best selling games and ask yourself if online play is a deciding factor. No, local multiplayer is where it is at. Anyway, while NSMB Wii will definitely not triple NSMB's first year sales like Mario Kart Wii did with Mario Kart DS, we should still see at least a moderate increase in the sales pace and that would be easily enough (see reason #4) to bring NSMB Wii past the 11m mark within one year.
Mario Kart had online play...
