I think when a company refers to a AAA project they mean it will get outstanding reviews all round and sell well at the same time.

The latter half is true but the former has nothing to do with the development of the game: AAA just means a game htat they put an enormous amount of resources behind and place bets on it making them a lot of money. Wii Music last year was one of Nintendo's AAA games, but it underperformed for sales.

Would you please link me to a source for that definition?

I think that it will get there quicker than Janet Jackson's top got ripped off.

Funny stuff.  Now seriously, give me a real source that doesn't have Kyle Orland in it.

For those of you who do not know, let me introduce you to Kyle Orland:

Ten random facts about Kyle (Refresh this page for the exact same list!)

  1. Kyle won the Montgomery County (Md.) Superintendent’s Writing Award in first grade for his short story, “The Lion’s Bad Day.”
  2. Kyle’s first eight months in the womb were spent in North Carolina; he’s been back only once since.
  3. Since 1998, Kyle’s facial hair has varied from “mini-burns” to “mutton chops.”
  4. Kyle’s second toe is longer than his big toe.
  5. Kyle has never beaten his wife at Boggle, despite frequent attempts.
  6. Kyle always chooses cookies and cream at the ice cream parlor.
  7. Kyle knows all the words to every song on the “Rent” soundtrack.
  8. Kyle cooks a mean baked ziti.
  9. Kyle can juggle five balls and three clubs, but not both at the same time.
  10. Kyle loves arranging things into arbitrary lists.

Okay, now you're just quoting articles that have "AAA" or "Triple-A" somewhere in the body.

Yeah, because - you have to read them, I admit - they're at least implying something about the budget.

This one is a bit more explicit in talking about sales expectations and budget

Not to mention that the general dialogue around "AAA" tends to point to development costs or investment, including on other forums (don't make me link to IGN or smaller forums to point this out, please, I don't wanna)

While it may sound crazy to some that the definition Khuutra pointed out includes games such as Lair, have you considered how ridiculous it is using metacritic (of all websites) as being the definitive source for whether a game is "AAA" or not?

It means the following games would fit the "AAA" definition: smaller games such as World of Goo / Braid, ports such as Okami / Chrono Trigger DS, or remakes such as MP Trilogy / RE4 Wii.

More importantly, it means excluding some of the biggest games around, like some mentioned (MK Wii, WSR), as well as nearly the entire DS library (including NSMB). Let me name two more big ones, just to make my point here:

Diablo II.

Starcraft.

I'm not fussing about the definition.  I was just hoping for a more definitive source.  Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

Fine then I rephrase the question:

Will this be the first Wii game with an aggregate score of 90+ to sell over 1 million copies since smash bros brawl?

There, are you happy now that you made me type out all that b@#%$&*t? People are always trying to argue semantics if the core of a question doesn't tickle their fancy.
