Wow, maybe Sony will get it right this time around, like a gaming comercial with games and stuff. It looks like they are advertising all the right games too.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I'm looking forward to this campaign. The last one for the PS3 was horrible, I didn't understand half of those TV commercials. But it was a future look that really help define the PS3.

Maybe i just don't remember but while DVD was talked about I don't remember it being a specific point of marketing in the adds. To me that hurts the main brand message about the viability of the PS3 as a gaming console. |
Thats what I'm trying to figure out. Are people converting from DVD's to Blu-ray or HD-DVD? Is the percentage high or low? Cause if it is then the PS3 is going to gain some ground in the Blu-ray department, if not then they will quickly have to change that campaign to games only.

Freudian slip? You be the judge.
Methinks this is more akin to the new advertising discussed here: http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=8036

How about, "Dude get a PS3"? Pot smoking star is a bonus.
Its still too expensive when the average mom and dad goes to the store to choose a console this Christmas. No commercial will fix that.

The baby was actually a quite clever play on the look of the PS3 and the movie 2001. You should watch it sometime.

Then again, it wasn't a big shock to see them fly right over the heads of most viewers. 2001 isn't exactly a consumer-friendly movie, but I thought the black monolith idea with the PS3 and baby at the end was very clever. Edit: Good God, most of you call yourselves gamers (and many of you sci-fi fans) yet you haven't seen 2001? The parallels between the movie and the PS3 commercials were obvious. |
I got the reference. However I still thought the commercials were stupid, creepy and annoying. Though granted if I had to rank them it would be Annoying, creepy and then stupid. It's a classic case of not driving home the points about the system the people care about because Sony thought all people cared about was "Playstation."
Now they are actually focusing on what matters, the games... but also using up time for Blu-Ray. Which while a plus obviously isn't even on the radar of your normal consumer.

The number of people converting from DVD? It's extremely low in my opinion. People claim it will rise as HD-TV adoption rises, but that's not typically how it works.
I mean, DVD had a heck of a time killing VHS. DVD had a large number of advantages over VHS. Menu selction, screen selection, smaller then VHS, don't deteriorate over time as eaisly, not as eaisly damaged by the player... etc.
High Def formats only have two advantages.
1. They look better. (So do DVDs over VHS if i remember right.)
2. They can store more on one disc. (I think, i'm sure HD Content takes up more room.)
The problem being... only 1 is a real advantage... because the average consumer see's something like "House Season 3" in regular and Hi-Def, and they see the House DVD version has 6 DVDS while the HD-DVD version only has 1 DVD so they buy the DVD version. Because their is something built in their heads where "More = Better." when it comes to the number of discs physcially.
This is why you'll notice that TV shows and other things with more then two discs end up using the exact same amount of discs as DVD.
In the end in my opinion, HD-DVD will likely die, and Blu-Ray will ened up a Niche market that catches maybe 10% of the market before a real advance comes out.
