Forums - Sony - Sony PS division has lost $4.7 billion since launching PS3

Sony’s Q2 financials today have taken total PlayStation division losses to $4.7 billion since PS3 launched in November 2006.

The facts:

  • FY 2007: -$1,970,923,859
  • FY 2008: -$1,079,994,103
  • FY 2009: -$577,207,240
  • FY 10Q1: -$413,541,667
  • FY 10Q2: -$653,333,333

Total loss: $4,695,000,202

All figures come from Sony’s investor relations page.

Note that both quarters so far this financial year include losses from Sony’s Vaio business. Figures for the full fiscal years are losses purely from gaming. Prior to Q1 this year, the division was called “Game”: it’s now known as the “Networked Products & Services” division.

It’s also worth noting the following. These are the losses Microsoft’s Xbox division suffered during the first Xbox’s release. As you can see, they’re not as heavy as those currently being incurred by Sony:

  • FY 2002: -$1,135,000,000
  • FY 2003: -$1,191,000,000
  • FY 2004: -$1,337,000,000
  • FY 2005: -$539,000,000

Total loss: $4,202,000,000

But i think they will recover it and can make a hell alot of profit if they utilize it correctly. From

Blu-ray - royalties

Cell - a base for PS4 which will not need as much R&D as much as the PS3 as most of the cost, approximate $2b went into Cell Research.

Cell - they could also utilize the cell processor in PC and give competition to Intel if they decide to do it

well, idk how much losses vaio actually has...but its still looking pretty bad considering sony has 2 positive income earners (ps2, psp)

Sony may have lost 4.7 billion, but we gained gaming bliss. Fair exchange, no?

Ouch!

Isnt this already the third thrhead about this?.

So the PS3 has probably lost them $6billion or so then?

Those reasons you give to turn a profit are reaching a bit arent they?

i agree, they screwed up abit but they have invented some big royalty earning tech like Cell and Blu-ray.Blu-ray already making them and Toshiba recently launched Cell processor containing laptop.

The difference between the PS3's losses and the XBox losses is, Sony will eventually make a profit off the PS3 and will be able to lower the total amount lost. M$ will never be able to lower their losses for the XBox.

Okay well let's just hope that with the slim creating increased sales (which should mean more game/accessory sales) that Sony can turn a profit from now on. I know they won't be able to make up 4.7 billion but if they can get that number down that would be awesome, then they can get it right with PS4.

didn't vaio and walkman get smacked together with the ps division ? it's bound to make it a bit worse. According to the q2 stuff it seemed that conversion rates and vaio were particularly to blame for the loss.

Check out my game about moles ^

Walkman's actually profitable.

Vaio isn't though. Also got to look at all the clearance and bundles they did for the Phat PS3's b4 the slim launched.
