Forums - Microsoft - How can Xbox Live maintain its greatness?

A lot of people might disagree with this, but if MS wants us to use & embrace avatars, it would be nice if we could do something with them in a Home/Second Life-type environment. At least a virtual arcade or something.

First off: people touting Facebook and Twitter on Live are dumbshits who don't realize the PS3 has a browser. Really people, come on.

And I think Xbox Live would be an amazing value if they simply lowered the price or just made it free. When i was choosing consoles, a huge deterrent for me was the xbox live subscription fee. Even after I got my PS3, Gears 2 and some then-exclusive jrpgs tempted me, but again the Live subscription fee killed it. Basically it was, I would've had to pay $60 for Gears, then pay $50 to play it with people, and time and time again that turned me away.

Yeah, the PS3 has a browser, but folks don't realize you can't do JACK via a PS3 browser on Facebook. Try it and see.

Also, if you pay $50 a year for LIVE, you deserve to get own3d. I have never, EVER paid more than $30 a year for it. Why are the only people quoting $50 a year PS3 bots?

I have paid for LIVE for 5 years and think it's a good value. If you can't afford $3 a month to play online, LOL.

LIVE offers a lot more than just gaming online.

The charging for Xbox Live Gold thing is working for now but in the next generation, if Sony doesn't screw up out the gate like they did the beginning of this generation, the XBL Gold subscription fee is going to turn people off. People pay for live because they have to (if they want to play with their friends on 360). If 1) Sony doesn't take too long to release the PS4 2) Releases it at the same price point as the NextBox and 3) Makes their PS4 easy to develop for so as to encourage third-party development, then the PS4 will win favor over the NextBox unless MS stops charging for live. Like it was said in another thread. People don't pay for live gold because of its better features. They pay for it because they have to (if they want to play with their friends. Who are more likely to own a 360 in North America). Though MS doesn't have to make all of xbox live gold free to get the upper hand next generation. Just the online multiplayer and the other features that PSN also has. The features that XBL Gold has that PSN doesn't, XBL can charge for those.

MS got away with charging for online play back with much less successful original Xbox. I think PSN will start charging as well. Clearly there's a huge market willing to pay.

Well other than online gaming it doesn't offer much more.

On occasion I take advantage of the Deals of the Week. That's one of my favorite things about Gold.

Why should i pay $300 for a console, only to find out i need to spend another additional $60 for games, i mean jeez louise guys.

But i think LIVE should be Free, or some kind of family deal.

Sure there is a core group of gamers that will still pay. Just like original Xbox owners paid for live to play Halo 2 and what not. But the NextBox won't be as popular as PS4 (assuming that Sony doesn't screw up again) if they continue to charge for online multiplayer (unless Sony decided to charge for PSN).

I think Joy Ride will be the first basic implementation of that.

It doesn't matter if the nextbox is as popular as the PS4. The original Xbox charged even though it only sold a small fraction of the PS2.

As long as people buy MS consoles they can get away with charging.

Uh, no.

You can debate and argue over it, but guess what? No one - I repeat - no one is forcing you to pay for LIVE. You don't need it to game. Want to play with friends who also own side system?

You have to: Pay for the electricity to operate the console - pay for the Internet service to get online - pay for the game and the list goes on and on. No one ever told me 'Either you GET LIVE or take this bullet.' It's a choice. You don't want to pay? Don't. But don't complain because 'I want to play with my friends and I am too cheap to pay for it.'

Yeah, you can game for free with PSN, but what good is that if all of your peeps are on 360s?

Peer pressure is NO JOKE.

I just want them to focus less on shit like Netflix and more on improving the online quality. I mean yeah its great to have netflix and all that but I'd rather have an online service that never lags or cuts out then be able to watch movies that I can just as easily rent.
