The charging for Xbox Live Gold thing is working for now but in the next generation, if Sony doesn't screw up out the gate like they did the beginning of this generation, the XBL Gold subscription fee is going to turn people off. People pay for live because they have to (if they want to play with their friends on 360). If 1) Sony doesn't take too long to release the PS4 2) Releases it at the same price point as the NextBox and 3) Makes their PS4 easy to develop for so as to encourage third-party development, then the PS4 will win favor over the NextBox unless MS stops charging for live. Like it was said in another thread. People don't pay for live gold because of its better features. They pay for it because they have to (if they want to play with their friends. Who are more likely to own a 360 in North America). Though MS doesn't have to make all of xbox live gold free to get the upper hand next generation. Just the online multiplayer and the other features that PSN also has. The features that XBL Gold has that PSN doesn't, XBL can charge for those.

MS got away with charging for online play back with much less successful original Xbox. I think PSN will start charging as well. Clearly there's a huge market willing to pay.

Sure there is a core group of gamers that will still pay. Just like original Xbox owners paid for live to play Halo 2 and what not. But the NextBox won't be as popular as PS4 (assuming that Sony doesn't screw up again) if they continue to charge for online multiplayer (unless Sony decided to charge for PSN).

It doesn't matter if the nextbox is as popular as the PS4. The original Xbox charged even though it only sold a small fraction of the PS2.
As long as people buy MS consoles they can get away with charging.
