Forums - Sales - Why all this talk about Wii Mk2 in 2010 or even 2011? It doesn't make sense

At the beginning of Wii's life Nintendo may not have conceived of the Wii outselling PS2 in lifetime sales. But within the space of a year Nintendo knew they had a phenomenon on their hands and surely they dreamed the dream that they would have the greatest selling home console ever...EVER!!! http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=PS2&reg3=All&weeks=60.

Forget the PS3 line it's just a space filler.

As of today (well 25 October actually) Wii Sits at 55 million consoles sold (well near enough as makes no difference). The PS3 sits at 133 million consoles sold (well a tad over but by such a small amount that it can be ignored).

Yep PS2 is still selling. Will it sell enough to crack 134 million?

Last holidays PS2 did 2.3 million http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php?cons[]=PS2&reg[]=Total&start=39761&end=39824

Recently PS2 has been selling less than 1/2 what it was doing in 2008. My guess is this holiday will be its last and it will just manage another million before it says it's final good-bye. PS2 end of life sales 134 million plus a bit. Superb achievement.

This leaves Wii as it is now vs. PS2's final number at 79 million in favour of PS2.

Nintendo has recently downgraded it's current FY sales predicitons to 20 million. But so what? Wii has already taken the crown for most HW sales in a calendar year. Wii is totally on track to overtake the PS2. It might take another 4 years to do it (so achieving it in 7 years as opposed to PS2's 9) but if they release Wii 2 within the next 2 years Wii will be at ~100 million and it's likely Nintendo will lose their chance at grabbing the crown.

Wii is selling great. Wii is profitable. Wii can be the best selling home console ever. Why screw that up by releasing Wii 2 before Wii's place in history is guaranteed?

Or do you see Wii continuing to sell significant numbers for 2-3 years after Wii 2 comes out? PS2 has sold 27 million in the 3 years since PS3 launched. Could Wii do the same after Wii 2 comes out? I dunno, seems doubtful for Wii to sell much if it is competing against its newer self, PS3 and 360.

Or do you see Wii 2 as an even bigger phenomenon than Wii? Perhaps, but I have my doubts. I'd rather back Wii by giving it at least another 3 years of clear sales, then release Wii 2 and continue Wii for a final year or 2 to get ahead of PS2.

Has Nintendo projected further sales further into the future and come to the conclusion that there will be a fairly rapid drop off in sales from 2010 on? Has the merely modest rise in sales they got from the price cut spooked them into thinking Wii is reaching some sort of saturation already?

Do rumours of a Wii 2 have the potential to affect Wii sales negatively?

To put it bluntly, all of this "Wii2" talk is being churned up by people with ulterior motives. I can't believe they are honestly that stupid so it has to be their bias.
