2 min? What? Is that the entire length of your commercial break?! We have atleast 5min (about 10 commercials á 30sec) and then the specific channel show upcomming shows and trailers, and then we're back.

In NA for a 30 min show, you have about 8 min of commercials or 4 commercials spots of 2 min with (generally) 30 sec commercials, this can vary usally between 30 secs and 60 secs more.

As an advertising major this thread is my bread and butter

4 ad breaks in 30 mins?

Are you sure that it's not one long ad break broken up with a pesky show in the middl?. We get 1 break between the show and 1 after the show. Both around 3-4 mins but they seem to be longer.

Did you never wonder why the Simpson was only 20mins long on the BBC?

I'd like to see 20 1.5 min ads during the 30 mins that coronation shyte is on.

I always assuemed Simpsons was shorter on BBC2 because it was a show that had an ad breack in it. 1, 2 but not 4.

Looks like Microsoft are going for the throat this winter.

I can't stand talentless wannabe shows like X factor, but the bottom line______________ is that Microsoft taking over an entire ad break during saturday night prime time TV on ITV1 is a HUGE deal and shows me that microsoft will continue to be relentless this gen.

This advert will get through to 15 million viewers, the significance of this can not be ignored.

True. What's carry's FAR more significance though is the RESULT of the ad campaign.

Nintendo too have cash to burn so it is almost garantee there will be a reaction from that party promoting the black wii and that wii fit addon thingy.

Yikess!!

BTW I just installed windows 7 and there is something about" SKY coming soon" in the media centre. I thought it was just xbox.

i absolutely hate x factor
but i know tons of people who watch it , the only problem for microsoft is that all of them already own 360s .

End of 2012 prediction:

xbox 360 : 73-75 million  playstation 3 : 72-74 million  wii : 104-105 million

Most hyped for :

Bioshock: infinte, The Last Of Us, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Agent

Bitching what? I think you just don't understand.

I agree that X factor for the UK is as big if not bigger as American Idol for the US but what I said (I'll highlight it so that it looks more clear to you) is that what's important for a company is the amount of people and not a pourcentage of population or a proportion.

Now let's try to see if you understand with a question: Which ad would cost the most (in terms of money of course), an X factor ad or an Amercan Idol ad?

It sure is the best solution to advertise the 360 in UK but we were comparing both shows. No need to get sentimental over this.

Microsoft UK is not gonna buy ads in the States.

And X-Factor is bigger in the UK than American Idol is in the States.

Wow thanks for the heads up. I didn't knew about all this stuff you're talking about.

/sarcasm

You bring nothing new on the table. What's your point?

Lets see.. a 30 second ad costs about 5 euro per 1000 adults.. thats adults and not teens and kids... which are cheaper to advertise for..

So at 15 million viewers thats... 30 sec for 75.000 euro... probably a bit less because of the adult/teen/kids ratio and the loss of viewers during an ad break... SO how long is an ad break? 4 minutes? that would be 600.000 euro.. cheap..

Bad move!

The cost of an entire ad break will not establish XBOX any more than half of that same ad break. Which is why this is a "waste" of money. But sure, if you got the money to spend go for it. But this is not cost efficent.

Nice to see that your more than just a PS3 fanboy!  Now your an advertisement analyst!!! YAY for you......  I am sure microsoft has entire teams of those guys so I would guess they know a few more things about advertising than you do.

Sounds like Microsoft is going to spend heavily on advertisements this season.  And that is never a bad thing if you want to increase market share.

Why would i be a fanboy? And secondly, there are multiple studies around consumer perception with commercials. And a solid 2min ad won't neccessarily establish the communicated message any more than what a 1min ad would. There are studies that show that 30 sec ads give the best bang for the buck, hence why most commercials go by that concept.

With hypothetical numbers lets say with the first 30 seconds you might establish the message to 30% of the viewers watching that commercial, the next 30 seconds will not give you another 30%, but rather a 5-10% boost. And another minute of that, will decline the awareness boost even further. The cost is X times 30seconds for 30% awareness, the next 30 seconds is still X times 30seconds, but for the profit of 5-10% awareness. And that is why its not cost efficient to go with longer ads.

Short 30 second ads in quantity is the way to go. Just because its an entire ad break wont make it any more cost efficient. But like i said, if you got the money and are willing to spend hard cash on those extra 10 whatever %, to gain more awareness. Sure go ahead, its your money, and you've probaby budgeted money to spend on that sort of advertisment. And it does add more awareness than a standard 30 sec ad. But its still not cost efficient. And this isnt just me saying so, look it up yourself.

Jees. Everybody watches this show over here ( cept me) nice move MS

1) Your posting history shows if your a fanboy or not, and I would dare say most here would agree your a fanboy.

2)Could you give me a link to these studies?

The only thing Microsoft has to do is keep peoples attention, and make sure these commercials are good.  As long as they do that they will work proper.  Most people do agree that Microsoft has had some of the best commercial spots for the 360 this generation.  And in my opinion better than anything Sony or Nintendo has come up with yet.  So I don't think any of your hypothetical #'s has any bearing.

If Microsoft thought they would only be slightly better than a shorter add I can guarantee you that they wouldn't have done the longer ones.  Like I said, they have teams of people that just sit around and think about this stuff.  And I can assure you that they have more incite than anyone in these forums do.
