Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 360 Sky Problems Caused By “Unprecedented” Demand

i'm not from the UK so let me know if this sounds correct. Sky is a cable TV provider and if you subscribe to their service at 50 pounds a month you can use this sky player on your 360 at no additional cost?

i don't have cable cause i don't particularly care for television especially at the price but this is certain a nice little perk for those that do.

Sky is a Satellite-based service (hence the name), not cable. And packages run from £15-£50 a month (roughly).

Existing Sky customers get this service free with Xbox Love Gold, non-existing will have to pay £15 to get this service - which, imo, is the way forward as it's on-demand, unlike most of Sky's content (which I assume is down to technical limitations of being a satellite service).

No

Its a sattelite service and you dont need to subscribe at £50 per month to use this.  (I do, as I have SkyHD multiroom.. so this will be free for me).  But I think the cheapest you can get this for is £15 per month.

Sky isnt just any tv provider... they are biggest provider, by a mile, of pay tv.  They have the rights to many sporting events.

I wouldn't say sky is the biggest. I would say it's the only one that is actually worth paying for.

okay, satalight/cable...all the same to me.  completetly agree with that last part.  i'm going to sign up for netflix now that the on demand downloading is coming to the ps3.  not exactly the same service but kind of the same idea...i am slave to no one but least of all the tv schedule.

but it is the biggest by a long long way... so you'd be wrong not to say that.

Yea but it wouldn't be my choice words to describe it. That's what I meant. Rather than saying they are the biggest I would tell people they are the only one worth paying for. Wasn't denying that they were the biggest because no one else even comes close size wise. Could have chose my words better. Sorry about that.

apparently its heading to the ps3 aswell, but the never heard of the source (C21 Media) http://www.c21media.net/index.asp

Not strictly true.  It is on-demand but they also stream live channels for people with multiroom or sky broadband plus.

The big thing is also that it gives a way for Sky to get into living rooms where those living rooms are in a building where a satellite dish is not possible.  Sky will promote this... you can bet they will be promoting 360 boxes on their site for people that cant get a dish.

Hmmm, what about those who are HD and multi-room, but aren't officially multi-room.

Is it streaming HD content? And can you use your 360 to store the content, a la Sky+?

They're SD streams, don't think you'll be able to store content due to licensing, at least not yet.

I called it! I said the other day when they were having problems it was due to demand. I would imagine that Microsoft and Sky didn't know it would be this popular. Hopefully they get all of the bugs ironed out and this goes somewhat smoother.

Maybe they get all of the bugs worked out before they unleash this on directv early next year!
