Someone who has played the game, is there any surprising plot twists towards the end? Or is it your standard cliche sci-fi affair?

There is only a plot twist in the beginning. Your superior that gave you orders actualy works with aliens and this guy (later revealed hes also an alien) that you keep chasing helps you. Then its all shoot and kill.

Does it really matter,  I thought that Soleron said that the character does not dictate the role?
