Forums - Sony - Ratchet and Clank ToD review thread.

@ Neos

I was dissappointed with Super Mario Bros 2 and especially Mario Sunshine. Just sticking Mario into a game doesn't make it a superior platformer for me. I would rank pre-Sunshine platform games like Spyro the Dragon, Superfrog, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ape Escape, Crash Bandicoot, etc higher.

Mario Sunshine is garbage. There are literally dozen and dozens of 3D platformers that I'd rank far ahead of Mario Sunshine. It's hard to see where they went so wrong after Mario 64. Meh. I'd rather have Mario in 2D anyways. Where's a sequel to New Super Mario Bros?

Reviewers would disagree with you.  While it scored lower then Mario 64.  Mario Sunshine is still one of the highest rated platfromers out their with a Metacritic average of 92. (Amusingly it's the first game i've seen with a User average lower then the review average.)

Which coincedentally is higher then every R&C game released aside from Tools of Destruction, which currently also has a 92.

I've never played Mario Sunshine, but based on the 92 Metacritic average i'd guess that's it's actually a very good platformer and just gets so much grief because people expect more from Mario.

I agree wholeheartedly

Therein lies your problem.  Play the game and find out what garbage it is.  That game just slapped the Mario model into a game and made you waste fifty bucks.  There was no fun in that game.  I played a great deal of it 7-10 hours, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.

@ Kasz216

I've played Sunshine and didn't like the game at all, neither did anyone else I know. One reason the game may have scored higher is due to hype, it's a Mario game, so a very important game for Nintendo. I think the same may have happened with regard to Gears of War (and more recently Halo 3), which was very important for the XBox 360 platform at the time.

I think one important reason why Oblivion scored so high on the PS3 is mainly because it's a good improvement over the XBox 360 version which scored high as well. It's a very good game no doubt, but they could have pushed the system so much further as well and polished some more bugs.

I believe some of the PS3 exclusives are well underrated (only in direct comparison to other titles, by default I would have been much harder reviewing any game) and many PS3 cross-platform ports overrated due to the games receiving good scores originally on the XBox 360. I think the gaming press are overall just as much system or game "fanboys" like almost anyone else. The PS3 has generated some negative feelings with some of the gaming press, this for example due to XBox 360 affection or unrealistic short term expectations, affecting scores.

So what I really wanted to say, IMO take rating comparisons with a grain of salt.

Nah, I never played Mario Sunshine because I knew i wouldn't like it from the previews.  However that doesn't mean that it's a bad game.  That just means it's not my kind of game.  I can't see how a game that has no fun at all. (Which is like... what, a 6 rating) could get an average rating of 9.2 no matter who is on the game.

Heck I didn't even really care for Mario 64, it was a pretty decent game but it didn't set my toes tapping.  However I could see how it was rated that way, and would of given it a similarly high ranking than it got.  Higher then games I've actually had a lot more fun with.

Personal expeirence  =/= review in my opinion.

For example, Snakes on a Plane vs Schindlers List.   Snakes on a Plane or some other similarly campy movie is going to be a heck of a lot more entertaining and fun then Schndilers list... yet there is no way it should be rated higher.

Because more people overall are going to enjoy Schindlers list, as opposed to a campy movie which I will enjoy more by laughing at it.

mario's like a plague i guess, somehow he wormed his way into a r&c thread??? i guess that's how he got into so many games...

anyways, as for r&c i'm loving the demo and can't wait to get it!

My comment on GT:

Collecting bolts, upgrade your weapons, going to planets;

Done it already four times....AND GUESS WHAT!!

I WANT MORE I WANT THIS GAME!

WAAHHHHH!!!! who agree with me?

The main difference being that Snakes on a Plane sucks ass. Just like Mario Sunshine, and I base that both on my own personal experience with the game and about 5 of my friends' opinions.

As for this game, I wish they would use this kind of formula more often. Most of the time all they do with a sequel is start you off in a different place with new weapons, and it's the exact same game. TOD seems to mix it up a lot more than most games do and it does it without sacrificing what made it cool in the first place.

I totally want this game. Number 1 on my list. I just hope the weapon effects linger while you pull out a different weapon, that way I can suck up a bunch of enemies with a guided tornado gun shot and then shoot the living crap out of them with something else while they're stuck in it. Think F4 twister with touch sensitive fusion grenades blowing around inside it.

Looks like the best game on the PS3 so far, and the first one out that makes me actually want the system.
