Forums - Nintendo - EDGE gives New Super Mario Bros Wii a 7/10

seven seems reasonable.. i think the fact that its so multiplayer-focused would probably stop me giving it a higher score if it was me reviewing it.. but i still want to play it. and its not like i wont have another kick-ass mario game to play this winter

My problem with EDGE is not the numbers (their scale is different), but the fact that they come off like a bunch of pretentious knobs when they say things like "The levels are largely contrary to the game's multiplayer purposes, and the knockabout jollity of such an awkward reappropriation of design only last so long."

Stop acting like you're writing to your former flatmate who went to Oxford and write for normal people.

I dont think people really expect much out of this game as many would for any other 2D Mario games. If it plays like a 2D Mario then thats all people really care about. I think EDGE was just trying to hard reviewing this game.

Nah...don't try and pull that crap "People weren't even expecting much from this game" excuse just because EDGE gave it a 7. You forget, EDGE pretty much blows, so I would disregard them period as many already had. If IGN, Gamespot, Game Informer, etc. give it low marks, then sure pull this move (as I've noticed with many Wii games that get low scores but had some hype)....but not for EDGE.

It may be ONM, but they gave it a 96%, so if no one was "expecting much", it wouldn't score anywhere NEAR that high, even from the official magazine. By contrast, people "expected much" from Lair, and PSM gave it a 50. Just saying

Im hoping NSMB Wii to be as fun as it was on the DS, and like it was fun with SMB1-3, SMW etc....Even if EDGE gave them a 1 or a 10 it doesnt matter because people really dont expect much (as like innovation crap etc) for a 2D Mario.  Its a 2D Mario seriously whats more to expect?  I wasnt refering to EDGE alone but in general to any reviewers (tho im sure others would rate better...and for your info i probably dislike EDGE as much as you do nor give a crap about them).

...but again its a 2D Mario ....how much do you really expect out of that game?  Cause im thinking itll be similar like all the other super fun 2D Mario games.  Only things i can expect new is the playability with 3 other people and the new weapons i guess, not alot other than that.

Sounds like the game is going to be a lot of fun

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

What?? blasphemy!

Seriously though, not a big deal. I believe there were several review sources gave gave Mario Kart Wii 7s and low 8s and yet it remains my favorite Wii game alongside Smash Bros. There is absolutely nothing that can deter me from buying this game, Mario is my all time favorite series.

Plus many big Wii games that receive low review scores tend to do phenomenal in sales for some odd reason (Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, Game Party, Carnival Games, etc..) so maybe this is a good sign for NSMB Wii.

How is single player? It sounds like their main complaint is that multiplayer is only fun in short pick up and play bursts... which.. is what it's for no?

True, besides what is a review but a glorified opinion, the only review I care about, is the one when I get that controller in my hands and get to try it myself

Wii Sports - 7
Wii Sports Resort - 6
MK Double Dash - 5
MK Wii - 6
Wii Fit - Edge didn't feel the need to review one of the biggest games this gen.

NSMB Wii - 7

I'm suprised people are suprised at Edge's review.
When it comes to this kind of Wii game, ie 'casual' fun multiplayer, I think Edge uses a 7 point scale.

How in the world do you give Sports resort a lower score than the original Wii sports?
