Forums - Sony - Sony's 360 degree holographic prototype!!

http://www.ps3news.com/General-Off-Topic/video-sonys-new-360-degree-3d-hologram-display-in-action/

This weekend a video of Sony's new 360 degree 3D hologram display in action surfaced via GameTrailers.

This cylindrical concept can be viewed from all angles, and was on display at Tokyo's Digital Contents Expo just before the weekend.

Still under development, the prototype is about 10.6-inches tall (and 5.1-inches in diameter). Sony doesn't seem quite sure what to do with it at the moment, but says it's considering various uses, like digital signage, or even a digital photo frame for the home.

It only supports a 24-bit, 96 by 128-pixel stereoscopic color image right now, but you don't need glasses to see the 3D effect.

Check out the link, since it has some pictures and a video.

I know that it's just a prototype but do you imagine your favourite game rendered like this?

Really cool! Although, didn't Dragon's Lair use the same type of Holographic imaging that was viewable from 360 degrees in the arcade like 20 years ago?

Edit: Nevermind, it was Time Traveler and it wasn't viewable at 360 degrees.

Moreover, it was a cabinet.

Sony's 360, eh? Now, who's the copycat?

I think Time Traveller used a primitive HUD type technology that basically projected a flat image onto glass. I don't think the projections themselves were recorded stereoscopically and they definitely weren't 3D rendered.

Okay, the Wiki site explains: "The holographic effect is an optical illusion using a huge curved mirror and a CRT television set." so it definitely wasn't a holographic projection.

The same Time Traveller effect can be seen in those novelty "mirror" bowls that you place objects in and the curved reflective surface on the inside makes the object look as though it is "hovering" near the opening of the bowl (which is narrower at the top to limit viewer perspective). Neat illusion, but hardly the same.

@d21lewis wow man....

thats actually pretty cool, could be used in the future if it is developed a bit more
