Forums - Gaming - Joystiq interviews MGS4's Ryan Payton: Seems it's staying PS3 exlcusive

For the people who think that this game won't sell 2 million, you base this on what, past sales of previous games? MGS3 only sold 3 mil plus because the games story never followed Solid Snake, but Big Boss. So, MGS3 was never a sequel to MGS2, and at that time, people wanted a sequel. Now they have their sequel, on the PS3, that will end the series.

Also, controls have been fixed so that anyone can pick it up and play it. Controls were a major issue in MGS3, especially shooting in first person,(Had to hold down two buttons and use the left stick to aim.)

I'll take the case!!!

Sony couldn't afford not to have this game as an exclusive so chances are they've paid handsomely to keep it a PS3 exclusive. Comments made by Konami's president suggesting they'd need to port it to break even were most likely an ultimatum to Sony that if you want this exclusive you're going to have to make worth our while. Just a thought though.

timed exclusive, just watch it,

i mean, they do want to earn money right?

What good is a years timed exclusive going to do?

I think it's timed as well and that a 360 version will appear in 09 but by then majority who want the game will have already played it. The main money in this title will come from the PS3 or the title isn't going to make money at al. There is no way that a 1yr old port is going to make money, no chance in hell, I'd expect the 360 sales of the game to be very few indeed. If the PS3 version bombs, the 360 version will not be able to recover the costs being at least a 1yr port, it's just impossible. Whether the fans here like it or not, Konami need this game to sell on the PS3, the 360 version is just for some side cash in, nothing more.

Especially since Sony have already announced that they are going to be bundling the crap out of this game, so really, despite the fact that I believe the 360 will get the game it won't even surpass 1mil on the 360. Mark my words on that.

good post jlennon1 ...but the ps3 will sell 2 million worldwide the month it is released....

I'm glad Ryan Payton is answering all the stupid stuff about it going to the 360, while Kojima works on making an awesome game. I liked what he said at the end about the stupidity of "my console is better than yours." He's fed up with all the who is taking what exclusive talk.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Saying that you're committed to one platform is clearly not the same as saying that a particular game will NEVER get ported. The fact is Konami has a contract with Sony to initially release the game for the PS3 only. But, all contracts have terms, and as soon as said term expires, Konami is free to port it to any other console they want. If Konami admitted now that the game will eventually get ported to the 360 all hell would break loose.

Konami are fiercely loyal to Sony, since the very first Metal Gear on Snes or Nes, they've grown into what they are today because of PS and PS2.
However, should PS3 sales remain low to mediocre (which I'm sure they won't!), Konami will have to take action.

That doesn't mean a port won't sell. RE4 sold better on the PS2, even though it came out 9 months later. If they had played it on the GC, they likely wanted to buy it for their own system.

The main money in this title will come from the PS3 or the title isn't going to make money at al.

Again, RE4 sold better on the PS2, and since less money was spent on the port, the majority of the money came from that.

There is no way that a 1yr old port is going to make money, no chance in hell, I'd expect the 360 sales of the game to be very few indeed.

Even not taking RE4 into account, GTA III, VC, and SA all sold pretty well on the Xbox. They weren't mega sellers, like on the PS2, but they did make money (just the old Take Two management managed to blow that unrelated to sales).

If the PS3 version bombs, the 360 version will not be able to recover the costs being at least a 1yr port, it's just impossible.

How is that impossible? What if the majority of the fans waited for the 360 version? That's unlikely, but to call that impossible is a lie.

Whether the fans here like it or not, Konami need this game to sell on the PS3, the 360 version is just for some side cash in, nothing more.

I'm not saying a port will happen, or sell well. I'm pointing out your claims are crap because they are based on the false assumuption that 1yr ports don't sell well.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

The MGS fanbase is very hardcore, and with the easier controls this time around, I think that more will bite.

At least 2.5 mil LTD for MGS4.

To all of those who say it's a boneheaded business move for Konami to keep MGS PS3 exclusive, there is a very compelling argument that their decision is in fact the better long term choice. Without exclusivity, the PS3 could very easily see a slow and untimely death because there would be literally nothing earth shatteringly good on the PS3 that you couldn't get on the 360. The next huge title for Sony would be GT5 at the end of '08, and you can get a pretty decent replacement called Forza on the 360. So how would the collapse of the PS3 be at all advantageous to Konami, a Japanese company that is built on making games that appeal to the 360 and PS3 crowd?

All of a sudden, they would have one console that has the user base that their company is best set up to cater toward. And that one console is only strong in one territory: North America. It's position in Europe is solid at best and precarious at worst. Even more worrisome is the total non-presence the 360 has in Japan. The only system that has the potential to cater to the hardcore gamers ALL around the world that Konami is aiming at is the PS3.

Im not saying that Sony's doom=Konami's doom. Without the PS3, Konami can and probably would go on fine, but it would require some drastic organizational changes, which is not as simple as flipping a switch. The fact of the matter is that MGS4 is gonna sell brilliantly well on the PS3 and make a handsome profit. Therefore why risk hurting and potentially destroying your business ally for a short term profit, when the alternative long term possibility I wrote about above is not very healthy?

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
