I disagree, I really like the setup. I think it makes it the easiest to use, because it's same format as a normal TV screen. It is more fun on a big TV though I can imagine

PixelJunk Monsters is fantastic fun with 2-players! (in my view of course...) You could also check out Trine and Bomberman Ultra.
Watchmen: The End Is Nigh also has local 2-player, but the game is not that good, might not be a good fit to play with your wife either.
@Rainbird
how is this fun ??

Well, I already told you why I like it, so...
What is the issue, if I might ask?
You like Huge black bars on your screen that doesn't do anything ??
More power to you I guess, but for me I want them to try harder next me and not half ass the job.
I like that the picture is the same format as the picture would normally, it makes it more... normal I guess you could say.
Anyway, I like it, black bars be damned
Thanks for the help everyone. Seems that the plunge into PSN should make sense for local MP :)
@ Fufinu
If you're gonna start with PSN games, then PixelJunk Monsters is a blast in coop (in my experience). But while you're at it, buy Flower. It's an amazing game, although it's 100% singleplayer.
More emphasis needs to be placed on Army of Two. To me that game was way underrated. There were definitely a lot of places where it could have been improved but I had a blast playing Army of Two local co-op. That and RE 5 are my favorite co-op games on the PS3 yet.
