Forums - General - Saudi woman sentened to 60 lashes for work on show about sexual confessions

In most western democracies it is perfectly legal to talk about where and how to pick up people for premarital sex. Perhaps it would be controversial - but that is another matter.

The thing is in the west the things held most dear are human rights, generally those as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (with some rights being more important than others). That's why we are so grossly offended by things like this. It is an affront to both the right to not be subjected to cruel or inhuman punishment and the right to free speech.

Now Abu Gharib is not a valid example of western hypocrisy as that was not sanctioned by the government and indeed the offenders were punished as criminals.

Guantanamo Bay is a more valid example of hypocrisy for America at least as it does deny detainees human rights - a lot of people in the west wish for it to be shut down for this reason.

Saudi woman sentenced to year in jail for being raped by men. See that Iraqi girl that was raped if she had been raped by Saudi soldiers she would have gone to jail on top of the horrible experience of being raped.

No matter what you say the US doesn't imprison rape victims or stone or behead or dismember people in public for having sex and I'm pretty sure that is the end of the 'debate' about who is worse the Saudi or American governments

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I agree with this, I never said the US government is perfect, no government is and Guantanamo is a violation of human rights, but no matter how bad taking away people's right to trial and waterboarding prisoners it is nowhere near stoning people to death in public for what is not even a crime in most countries: sex or adultery as they call it even though in some cases the women aren't even married.

Abu Gharib has been addressed already, it is not a valid comparison as it was a criminal action (condemned by the state) rather than a state sanctioned action.

The Bottom line is the LAW is the LAW!! if you don't comply to it, you get punished!! in many time the USA failed to comply to its own laws which is evident by the examples above, the laws of KSA (no matter how bizzare they might seem to a stranger) are laws that are known to the citizens, and they are bound to respect these laws, think the laws of KSA are bizzare? take a look at some of the most strange laws in the USA:

1. Oral sex is illegal in 18 states, including Arizona.

2. In Virginia, it is illegal to have sex with the lights on.

3. It is illegal for husbands in Willowdale, Oregon, to talk dirty during intercourse.

4. Sexual intercourse between unmarried couples is illegal in Georgia.

5. Engaging in any sexual position other than missionary is illegal in Washington, DC.

6. In Connorsville, Wisconsin, it is illegal for a man to shoot off a gun when his female partner is having an orgasm.

7. In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, it is illegal to have sex with a truck driver inside a toll booth.

8. Having sexual relations with a porcupine is illegal in Florida.

9. It is illegal in Utah to marry your first cousin before the age of 65.

10. Sex with animals is perfectly legal for men in Washington state, as long as the animal weighs less than 40 pounds.

you see these are laws!! so if you do the crime, you do the time!!

Since you gave me a link to a picture of a woman being raped (dunno if it is real or not or even by american soldiers or even rape) you should look up saudi stoning videos online, I'm sure you'll find some somewhere since the internet is so big. As bas as the crimes of Abu Ghreib and rape are for human beings to slowly kill another person with stones to the head is literally inhuman.

I seriously cannot imagine how a group of people can kill someone that slowly, that painfullY and that violently. On top of that, that is the normal response to adultery.

This problem is not only in KSA either, in Pakistan, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Somalia and other countries this happens.

The big difference is that in the kingdom this is directly sanctioned by the government and indeed carried out by soldiers in public like it was just another average day. I'm pretty sure Iran and Saudi Arabia are the only two countries with government that officially sanction stonings.

Urgh, I can't stand corporal punishment, I condemn it. When are some countries going to realise that instigating corporal punishment for relatively minor offences like this is far worse than the initial offence?

It may be the law but that doesn't make it right. The state is still breaching the human rights of people and the state is at fault.

Also stop trying to derail the topic with a list of bizarre, unenforced laws on sex. Its an irrelevant red herring.
