Forums - Sales - Is 2D the new 3D?

Any growth in 2D is a good thing. Although I'm not wild about downloadable content, I can't help but be excited about things like Castlevania Adventure Rebirth, Bonk and NSMBWii most of all. 3D platforming has always been subpar; even 3D Mario games aren't as good as the 2D ones, and those are the best 3D ones. Other 3D attempts have been mostly terrible.

I agree growth in the 2D market place can't possibly be seen as a bad thing. I think for far to long developers have concentrated on the next big expansion in 3D. They have forgot that gamers don't need something with that much depth to have fun some of the funnest games in history have been side scrolling platformers.

DLC is also a turn off for me. I know that Sony will immediatly begin selling LittleBigPlanet DLC on the PSPGo/PSP3000 and I already know that Hudson plans to sell DLC for Bonk right out of the gate too. This upsets me because I expect to get the full experiance when I buy a new title not part of an experiance then pay more to get the full deal. Hopefully Mario and Sonic won't have DLC and if they get DLC hopefully its free or at least released long after the initial launch!

I agree I am looking forward to Mario and Bonk too. I have to say I intend to buy all four titles as soon as they release, I wasn't the biggest Bonk fan back in the day but I will definatly support the return of one of the titans of gaming. I read the NintendoPower article on Bonk and that got be hook line and sinker, now I am looking forward to it almost as much as Mario and Sonic.

Which Franchise will win this 2D battle - I think its obviously going to be Mario, Nintendo's brand power alone will sell NewSuperMarioBrosWii. The success of NewSuperMarioBros (DS) will contribute greatly to the success of its Wii counter part!

Will these 2D games sell? - I expect Mario to shift millions of units and likewise for Sonic and Little Big Planet.

Which Platform will become the new home of 2D gaming - I think that Sega will probubly port Sonic's new sidescrolling adventure to the Nintendo Wii where Sonic games are most successful. With Bonk , Mario and Sonic I don't think that the PS3/PSP/360 have a chance in heck of competing against Nintendo's 2D superiority!

Here's my expectations and best estimate at sales!

NewSuperMarioBrosWii: 8-million+ in sales

Sonic (Project Needle Mouse) - 2Million

Little Big Planet PSP - 1.8 Million

Bonk:Brink of Extinction - 150-200K

Sorry that was a typo, I made it a couple times considering that Little Big Planet on the PSP has the same name as the PS3 version. Anyways how many copies do you think these titles will ship?

2D is just a lot cheaper to make. It means less risk and a potential bigger profit margin. Obviously Mario will win and sell the most by far. Little big planet will probably get the best or second best reviews behind Mario but Sonic will probably sell more. The other game will probably not sell that great. But then again it's a cheap side scroller so it doesnt have to sell great to make money. If there is anymore influx of 2D side scrolling games the market will soon be over saturated and they will all fail in sales except for ones like Mario and maybe Sonic/LBP.

So in short no 2D will not overtake 3D games and they only have a place in the cheap end of gaming besides maybe a few big names like Mario or Sonic.

I don't know about platformers bu hand drawn 2d sprites animation is more time consuming and more expensive in fighting games like BlazBlue or KoF when compared to 3D animation like SF IV.

I love 2d games. I have had lots of fun with 2d games to be honest,

That being said the devs just dont seem to want to release 2d stuff. At least a few are catching on that 2d is just as good as 3d ig not in some cases better

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Wow that Mario game looks awful, who over the age of 10 would buy that?

The Wii has such bad games i should never have bought one.

Please state this as an opinion... this isn't a fact... I myself is hyped for this game, will buy it and I'm over 10

OT: untill kirby, Donkey kong, metroid, sonic ( a good one...Sega is announcing a 2-d sonic they better do it right...) and imagine an epic banjo title 2-d platform!

^ This will be when 2--d becomes 3-d... but were not far behind!

Awful? Ok that's your opinion but i disagree. As for people over 10 buying it? yeah, it's not like there could be any sort of demand from older gamers who cut our teeth on 2d mario games. Glad you pointed out that nobody will want this game besides me , cause now i won't get my hopes up for the multiplayer.

As for your wii? I feel bad for you, getting stuck with something you don't like. I hope you realised that you hated it soon enough to resell it for over market value on e bay, but if not, it will serve to teach you a lesson about reserching things before you buy them.

such an interesting concept. for obvious reasons, 3D will always be better, but i think having something 2D gives the player a sort of nostalgic feeling to playing. i love mario and megaman etc, cuz they remind me of the games i used to play, i think its like that for alot of ppl. There are people out there who think its just a gimmick having worse graphics; sometimes they are right, most of the time they are wrong. Its true making a game 2D is less expensive but i dont quite think thats what the developer was trying to achieve, games are meant to be fun no matter what they look like. That being said, i am a little weary about the new upgrade they are doing to the "Rocket Knight" game coming out soon for the PS Store and i think 360 Arcade, sometimes its better keeping things they way they were.
