Forums - Nintendo - How soon should we expect Wii2?

Why does everyone here seem to think 2012?

If Nintendo goes by their five year life cycle and Wii continues to shrink in market share, wouldn't you expect Nintendo's next console in 2011? I personally expect Nintendo to give the Wii one last big push in 2010 with Pikmin,Mario,Link and Donkey Kong, Fox hopefully all making appearances. But after such a powerful line up could Nintendo even keep the Wii going another two years?

So if Sony releases the Wand and Microsoft Natal instead of new platforms is it benificial for Nintendo to push into a new generation?

No, because who cares if Nintendo marketshare shrinks, as long as the Wii is outselling the competition and making Nintendo lots of profit? Right now NATAL and the Wand look like they will be mediocre sellers and not likely to boost PS3 and 360 sales, so Nintendo has no reason to rush their next gen console, they can wait until they've gotten most of the profits and sales from the Wii then launch sometime between 2012 and 2014

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Microsoft and Sony will have to wait: their new controllers will need some time on the market, and will need new games designed for these... plus, their userbase is finally large enough to really secure profits on the most expensive games out there: a new gen would be back to zero level, with even higher costs... and many devs would feel that situation too risky... so nothing new before 2012-2014 for both Sony and Microsoft...

For Nintendo, i think there are two possible strategies, and the launch of their new console will depend on which is the one they choose...

First: the "Wii 2" is just an update, with a more compact WM+ wiimote, HD graphics output, and fully backward compatible with the current Wii library... so the actual Wii could still stay on the market for two or three years at a very cheap price, $150, then $100... while the "Wii+" could be a kind of "Elit" SKU, released in 2010-2011, and priced at $300, then $250... and the two will co-exist...

Second: the Nintendo's future console will bring something totally new on the table, and will once again be ahead of the competition in terms of innovation and gameplay... holographic 3D, totally new control method, or whatever their engineers may come with... and no backward compatibility in that case... if that's what they do, they will wait till the technology is really affordable, and in the same time, will maximize the Wii profits as long as possible... and that new console won't be out before 2012-2013, if not 2014...

But of course, it's just how i view it, and i could be wrong in both cases... :)

Why worry about Wii2 when you can enjoy the Wii now?
When it comes, it comes.

But it will finally be HD, and that will magically make it better.

Plus there is the belief ports are easy, so they think developers will give the Wii 2 all the games they've been denying the Wii1, even though there should have been a flood of Xbox and PS2 games for the Wii by that logic.

Because the Wii is very successful, it has less reason to stop selling than the other consoles, those will surely not run out of momentum before 2011 either.

Sony has a ten year plan for ps3 -> 2016ish for their new console.

Nintendo never releases console first.

It all depends on Microsofts release

I hope your aren't serious

PS2 is also on a ten year plan, launched in 2000, PS3 launched in 2006.

Sony has actually said stuff like that.

Please link me, Sony saying that the PS3 will last 10 years does not count as they said similar things about the PS2 and and they still say the PS2 is on a 10 year plan. It should be quite obvious that they don't mean no new hardware for 10 years but if they have said that directly then again, please link me.

Those comments were made about 2007 at the latest.

A quick googling yielded different results: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-3287.html

That is from March 2004

2004 is earlier than 2007, and I was discussing the PS3, not the PS2.

I misread your meaning..

More googling: http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/07/20/sony-claims-ps3-matching-sales-expectations-confirms-10-year-lifespan/

That's from last year, Sony still confirming the ten year plan and even referencing the PS2.

Okay, was off by a year, but which did they mean? 10 year life cycle or before the next system?

Well they referenced the PS2 still selling where the XBOX and GameCube are not. You be the judge :P
