Forums - Sales - VGChartz Retro Sales Game of the Day (10/24) - Final Fantasy VII

FFVII is really a poor game, much worse than its predecessors.  I'm not a fan of the genre, but FFVI is usually acknowledged by longtime fans of this series as far superior to FFVII.

So why did FFVII succeed so brilliantly in terms of sales?  I think again successful marketing is the main answer, along with really a lack of competition at that point in time on Playstation.  Interestingly, FFVII commercials showed no gameplay whatsoever in them.  This was really a first, as previously that is what game marketing had concentrated on promoting.  FFVII showed video of the FMV cutscenes so prevalent in this game.  Since this was pretty much a new capability on a mainstream console, it piqued the interest of many players.

FFVII is above all notable for developing a market for Japanese-style turn-based, menu-driven RPGs in the U.S.  Before this, even critically acclaimed games like Chrono Trigger didn't sell well in the U.S.  There just wasn't interest among players, as most American players were much more interested in action/adventure and platforming games that were prevalent in the 16-bit era.  FFVII almost singlehandedly enlarged the J-RPG audience in the U.S. to where it is today instead of the small niche it was previously.

(As a personal aside, I admit buying this game when it came out.  It interested me (not the commercials, but the way the game looked).  Sadly, I found the game to be one of the worst I've ever played.  This is the only game that has ever put me to sleep when attempting to play it, which does say something.)

To say the game isn't as good as it is said to be is wong.

I bought this game last generation after I bought Final Fantasy X. It was before I joined internet forums and learned about the fanboy wars and overhyping and all that crap.
There was absolutely no outside force that affected my feeling towards the game, it was just me and the game which is fantastic! There was a time when we didn't know any better about AAA games or exclusives and the games merit was based on how good it is. Well Final Fantasy VII deserved the praise imo.

AND I played it after Final Fantasy X and I still enjoyed it, the graphics didn't alter it's worth at all.

Assuming you meant "wrong" and not "wong," you are the one who is wrong.  Whether a game is good or not is a matter of opinion.  I think many Final Fantasy fans that were fans of the series before FFVII will tell you it's not the best game of the series.  If you enjoy it, great.  I didn't.

FFVII brought RPGs to mainstream and still today is hailed as the best RPG ever by many. Sometimes games sell because they are just that good.

elprincipe, I imagine (if many people see it) a lot of people will disagree with your comment, still you did a nice job explaining your reasoning, so thanks.

Sure.  I know many people will disagree, but that's my opinion.  Hell, I think the entire series from first to last is utter crap, but a lot of people disagree with that too, wouldn't you know?

I think it mostly sold due to its marketing campaign and is remembered because it introduced the west to JRPGs.

I didn't particularly enjoy it as a game to be honest, the characters seemed unlikable and fairly shallow. In the end I didn't care when Aries died because she annoyed the hell out of me. It's also one of the few games to irk me graphically, the character models just irritated me.

10/10 fantastic!! inspiring! in a league of its own.... *salutes* im out

I respect your "opinion" but it is not fact which you seemed to believe it is.

Not sure why you put opinion in quotes.  It's a little bit insulting, as if I had said your "opinion" was stupid.

Anyway, I never claimed it was fact.  What games are good or bad or whatever is all opinion.  I could tell you right now that Yoshi's Island has graphics that blow away Final Fantasy VII.  Surely you wouldn't take that as an assertion of "fact," even though it is definitely my opinion.

I did get the article posted up yesterday like I planned, but it should be up in a few hours. I could still use a few more well thought out comments about why FFVII sold well or why it still held in such high regard, to choose from to put in the article. So get your comments and votes in soon.

The game made the word/genre RPG known to common gamers. I could say Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia etc etc. to my friends and they would just stare at me but if I said FFVII they'd be "ohh". The game really brought the genre mainstream. Well that's what I think anyway.. RPG's are alot more niche in Europe to begin with I guess.

Oh sorry I didn't mean anything of it, I just meant to put emphasis on it because I "mistaken" your opinion for fact or whatever. Also, Yoshi's Island's graphics are much prettier than FF7's. I'm not a sony fanboy or anything -_-.
